1. Hi U2start folks!

I have been visiting this great site for a while now so I thought I’d finally join up and join in! My name’s Karen and I live in Sussex in the UK. I’ve been U2 mad since 1981 when I set up my parents’ VHS video recorder to tape a live U2 concert being shown on the TV (I think it was called ‘Rockpalast’). I didn’t know anything about the band at the time (I was a teenager) but was a fan of live music so I thought it would be worth watching. Little did I know what an effect watching that tape back would have on me – I was instantly hooked!

In June 1987 I went to see my first live show on the original Joshua Tree Tour. Fast forward 30 years and I took my own kids for their first U2 show in London for the 2017 Joshua Tree Tour. I have been lucky enough to see at least one show on every tour since, including the second night in London and Dublin for this tour.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read about me. I hope you like my avatar picture of Bono – I drew it myself!

    Hi Karen, welcome to U2start!

There are two U2 Rockpalast - or at least two that are referred to by that name. There's 1981-11-04 - Berlin and there's 1983-08-20 - Loreley, which coincidentally is our Show of the month Aug 2017. Both of them were broadcast over TV and both of them are fantastic examples of the band's energy in their early years. Do you remember which one did you see and tape? Either way, what a great start to a long lasting fan career

    PS. Great drawing
  4. Welcome Karen... this site will certainly cater for most of your U2 needs !

I don't consider myself quite a 1st generation U2-er since I was a bit of late starter (1983 and first gig Glasgow 1984).

It is great passing it on to the next generation though...have been to London, Turin, Canada and most recently this tour Amsterdam1 and Brussels with the kids.

    All the best,

    Edi in Essex
  5. welcome on board

I'm pretty sure it was 1981 as the reason I'd heard of U2 was because I knew they'd supported the Police in 1980. At the time I was a big Police fan so I figured any band in support would be worth a look. After that my Police fandom waned as my passion for U2 grew!

I was aware of them in 1980 via all the little adverts for gigs at the back of the NME...this strangely named little band who seemed to be playing loads of pubs gigs in London.

I remember Rockpalast 81 for The Who headlining, I still have the tape since it was broadcast on the radio, great gig. Did not know U2 were on that bill.
