1. Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I don't think Songs of Ascent is going to happen. Why at this point would they return to something they had planned on doing as a sequel of sorts to NLOTH? With how they seem to feel about NLOTH being a misfire, I just don't see them revisiting songs that were produced in the aftermath of that era.

And even if SOA was to be an album of all-new material, why call it that? I get that Songs Of Innocence, Songs of Experience, and Songs of Ascent sounds like a nice trilogy of "Songs"-titled albums, but they are basing SOI and SOE on William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience. There's no "Ascent" in that title, right?

Of course I'd love to be wrong, since I love any kind of U2/biblical connection, with Songs of Ascent being the title for Psalms 120-134 in the Bible. If that's their theme, bring it on.
  2. O, don't get me wrong. I have no illusions that SOA will ever happen. That's why I designed my own

I think you sort of answered your own question. The band has brought it up way more recently than 2010 (or whenever that was) as something they're still interested in doing, and while it doesn't fit with the whole Blake thing, it could be them putting their own spin on it, you know? Not to mention as you said, it would fit well.

I don't think it'll be the same album that it would've been in 2010 though, as in I don't think it's going to be a little EP or whatever of leftover NLOTH songs that were unfinished - at least that's what they sort of described it as back then.

Just a side note here, but it drives me crazy that U2 doesn't go in for EPs! With how long it takes for them to produce albums and how much stuff changes or is cut along the way, it's really a perfect solution - if they've been in the studio for a while, but know they aren't done with an album, know things are already starting to change - put out 3-5 songs on an EP!!

And if they're on an EP, rather than on an album, when the album finally comes along they can always release a reworked version if they think up a way (and they almost certainly would) to 'improve' the song. I mean, they did that with 2/3 of the songs on their original release!
  5. I really want it to happen and I think it will. I hope they maintain what Bono described as the sufi inspired, choral, ambient not commercial type prayer music (or something to that effect.) I hope Soon is on it...love that track, for as short as it is...hopefully it's a teaser.

That'd be fucking awesome by the sounds of it. Something a little more subdued, dude.
  7. Yeah, just something experimental...something different...subdued would be cool with me. It'd be a perfect trilogy IMO. Hope it happens.
  8. Also, I think we can stop thinking of this album being related to NLOTH...yes, it was borne out of those sessions but I think it inspired the whole Songs Of....motif. U2 just went back to the beginning in a way. The seed of the project ends up wrapping it up.

Let's hope it makes that much sense
  10. The whole Trilogy thing has worked for them in the past

    1) Boy / October / War
    2) TUF / JT / R&H
    3) AB / Zooropa / Pop
    4) ATYCLB / HTDAAB / NLOTH
    5) SOI / SOE / ???

    1) Early experiences, life on the road, finding their niche
    2) New directions, writing about their travels and experiences
    3) Starting over, crafting new sounds, re-writing the playbook
    4) Re-applying for the job of 'Best Band In The World' - a 10 year job interview
    5) We're gonna do it our way.....

You're certainly not wrong. It'd be cool to see Songs of Ascent come out and still hearken back a bit to what NLOTH was trying to achieve too, because NLOTH is certainly the black sheep of its respective trilogy.
