Eventually, the project grew enough that they thought it would be better if instead of just one album, they made both.

Some of this tunes had been around and meant to be what used to be called Songs of Ascent.

And this is why we need an interview with the boys that’s done by an actual U2 fan who asks the questions like these.
  2. I have a feeling this will be one of the few to not make the cut live... I don't know why, it's just a little slow and soft and I think they probably have other more downbeat numbers they'd rather play. I just am having a hard time imaging this in concert.

    It's a real shame, too. It's such a gorgeous song. We'll see...
  3. Absolutely love this song. Gorgeous. So heartfelt. It moves me in such a beautiful way.

I thought EBW was their best ballad since SYCMIYO. It has just been replaced. This takes me to a place that only a couple of their other love songs do. And I have at least 24 years of history with those songs so we can't get too carried away. But, just, shudder.
  4. I just need to say how fucking beautiful this song is one more time before going to bed
  5. My favorite song from this great album!!!
  6. I know Bono is an avid reader and he reads Pablo Neruda. One of his poems has a thematic resemblance to Landlady. It's called "Your Feet"

When I cannot look at your face
    I look at your feet.
    Your feet of arched bone,
    your hard little feet.
I know that they support you,
    and that your sweet weight
    rises upon them.
    Your waist and your breasts,
    the doubled purple
    of your nipples,
    the sockets of your eyes
    that have just flown away,
    your wide fruit mouth,
    your red tresses,
    my little tower.
    But I love your feet
    only because they walked
    upon the earth and upon
the wind and upon the waters,
    until they found me.

Compare it to the last part of Landlady:
    Every wave that broke me
    Every song that wrote me
    Every dawn that woke me
Was to get me home to you to see
    Every soul that left me
    Every heart that kept me
    The strangers that protected me
To bring me back to you
    Every magic potion
    Every false emotion
    I was swerving our devotion
To the lies we know are almost true
    Every sweet confusion
    Every grand illusion
I will win and call it losing
If the prize is not for you

You can see that they are both thankful for all the circumstances that brought them to their loved ones.

P.S. Neruda's poem is more beautiful in Spanish, if I may say so.

Very nice find! Seems like it's pretty plausible this went into the creativity mix for developing the song, somewhere along the line.
  8. Hope it makes the live cut.
Should of been side 1 for sure. some odd choices.

Lol we had poet Jan Neruda and apparently the Chilean Neruda took the name after him
  10. I'm really happy to see so many people rating this track so highly, even as the best on the album. It's actually one of the songs that has still to grow on me. It's not a lullaby like LIAWHL or 13 and it's not quite a ballad like Little Things... or Love Is Bigger... , this is more like a waltz. I'm not sure where I can hear it in a setlist, but I can imagine Bono wanting it included somehow; maybe a snippet or into to Best Thing?

( Oh and that istagram pic: Bono looks like a right munchkin next to such a huge door ? )

Niice find César! Definitely some similarities.
  12. The every wave that broke me part is almost the same as the chrous of Champagne Supernova
