The JT put them on another level. UF was a good album and they were successful. But they went from an arena act to being able to do stadiums when JT came out. They were THE band in 1987 vs one of the great bands in 1984-85. The JT is their biggest seller with two massive hits. It didn't make them, but it put them on a level few artists attain.
  2. Live Aid gave them a great platform to transcend from arenas to stadiums

    thats a very hot take
  4. I remember a lot of commentators saying that Live Aid made U2 that's untrue ,they already had 3 massive albums in War,UABRS,& UF they had done a massive world tour for UF playing sold put arenas across the US and headlined festivals and big outdoor shows in Europe ,yeah it widened their appeal but they still would have been huge without Live Aid.
  5. I find it amazing that people actually are downplaying the signifigance of the Joshua Tree album?! To me , it is their best album and it IS their most successful album. Significant enough to have a full tour dedicated to its anniversary. I do not get how it can downplayed like it was just a normal album.
The prior two albums were good and U2 were very popular. But I would actually argue that is Under A Blood Red Sky and SBS live on MTV from the video all the time gave them more exposure than the actual War album or even TUF album. Live Aid was good exposure, and helped with their popularity, but I don't think it made them. If the next album after Live Aid had been a dud, they would not have done as well. It was all part of the momentum. But JT put them over the top.
  6. Agreed..War and TUF didn't put them on Time magazine. Great albums no doubt, but JT IMO was far better. Hopefully if they bring the JT30 setup out again they'll shake up the additional songs from night to night. Or maybe if multiple nights, a JT show and an IE/EI show?
  7. JT was their high water mark.
  8. God people ... wake up!!! This proposed tour of 'downunder' is NOT going to happen , if my contacts are anything to go by! If it ever was seriously considered its so dead in the water now its not funny. Regardless think about it! A tour like this was speculated to be goes against every blueprint/roadmap that U2 has ever had when it comes to touring ( no new songs , don't want to be seen as a heritage act etc etc ) they are habitual creatures when it comes to firing up the beast that is the U2 machine! We will see them in 3 years time with a new collection of songs that they believe in and that stir the fire inside that will drive them for one final hurrah!!

    Joshua Tree tour?

    a) No new songs.
    b) Heritage act.
    c) Done from a financial/contractual motive.
  10. Sorry i should have clarified the JT30 hiccup! It was a ONE OFF, thought as a means to fill in time given SOE delays and an idea to keep the band tight and ready to roll when it came to hitting the road with SOE behind them ( we all know how it takes them sometime to hit their straps when playing live and the older they get the harder that gets to hit those straps!! it was an exception to the rule!! Wont be repeated! Contracts??? U2 can write or break whatever contracts they want , Do you really think that anyone pulls their strings? Do they even have strings ? NO! Why? Because they have never been nor ever will be puppets to any entity!!
  11. Further i live in AUS , im a long suffering dedicated fan !! But i would rather see them at the end of a year long tour playing as tight as a drum ( no pun ) rather than some patch work quilt of a second thought quick ( lets do this for the money ) half assed tour, they dont owe us anything, but i do believe they think about 'us' more than most suspect , they would also want to put on a memorable final fling and that means some solid time hitting many stages before they hit ours!!!!
