...except that ASOH is a fucking superb song both in studio and live, it's got some of the best vocal deliveries of their discography and a beautiful set of lyrics...

    ...All fine
Obviously the band don't share that view or it would be a regular in the set list, When TJT tour hit Dublin in 2017 they never played it even though they had played it on the tour that tells you all you need to know about it ,the muted reaction it got in Slane in 2001 probably put them off playing it.

I think if the band didn’t rate the song highly they wouldn’t have played it at all. They were also happy to give it a go as a rotational with bad right up until near the end of the 2nd leg. I think Bad was just the easier choice for most shows, the band are more comfortable with that song and it gets a better reaction. Bad is certainly a more loved song there’s no doubt about that but I think ASOH is a great song too regardless of what reaction it gets when played live.

Yeah, the thought of ASOH not being well received in a random one-off performance 16 years earlier SURELY had a big impact on their decission of not playing it at Croke Park 2017.

    Sure.

So why didn't they play it in Dublin???It's the most obvious place that they should have played it my point is they don't rate it highly enough to be a regular on the tour and apart from a certain amount of hardcore it's not a song that most people wanna hear.

Unlike The Little Things That Give You Away, which got all of Croker jumping and dancing

I genuinely believe shit like this doesn’t cross their minds at all. They were never going to skip playing Bad and they’ll never add a bonus song if they can get away with it.

They come on stage at such a time that means they can only play x amount of songs before curfew. No room for anything fancy.
  7. If they played 2 nights in Dublin I think ASOH would have been played it was on the majority of locations that had 2 shows at the expense of Bad. Would we argue that Bad isn’t as popular or as great a song as ultraviolet since it wasn’t played as often on the tour? I don’t think so ( although I love the 2 equally).
  8. Exactly, this was my point. I'm 99% sure the reason for not playing ASOH in Dublin was laziness.

BTW I'll work on that WOWY video I promised to you this afternoon. Word.

No, they like Bad better I thought it was a very good version they were doing on this tour also. As was said, if they played two nights in Dublin they probably would have played it. Now extra songs, and/or a song they had not been done before on the tour that would require rehearsal. You are correct, they are lazy a lot of times in that regard. But I don't think this is an example of it.

Of course they prefer Bad over ASOH – just as 99'95% of the audience do!

But they played both Bad AND A Sort Of Homecoming in Seattle, San Jose and Los Angeles. So there was no excuse for not doing it in Dublin as well (which was their homecoming gig after all) other than lazyness... Or lack of confidence. And I prefer to think they're lazy rather than insecure in their own songs or in their ability to perform them.

Yes, the very beginning of the tour when the setlist was developing. You know U2 get into a pattern with setlists and typically follow it. Its about vibe and flow with setlists it always has been. Beyond those handful of shows, that was not done and they were ALL the first week or two of the tour. It has nothing to do with either lack of confidence (ASOH was played again on the tour, but w/out Bad) or laziness. They still played ASOH at later shows. So they should have played MLK also in Dublin under your criteria, it was done at other shows (at the beginning of the tour), therefore Dublin, it must be played or U2 are just lazy or unsure of themselves. C'mon. The pattern at the time was two nights, ASOH was played one of them. Dublin got one night. It was not done. It really is that simple.
Yeah, I get it, Homecoming, its Dublin it fits. It is almost cliche' that they play it. Maybe that is why they didn't? Since 2001, U2 have played Homecoming ZERO times when playing Dublin (and 2001 was a debacle). Its simply not like One Tree Hill with New Zealand.
  12. It is called “A SORT OF Homecoming” not “Homecoming”. Why do people think they should have played it in Dublin...?
