1. Interesting. I have checked the recording and it does indeed sound much better than the previously existing version. Interestingly enough, the New Year's Daze version runs a bit too fast (the pitch is higher than it should, almost by a semitone), the Live From Birmingham 04.12.1982 runs almost perfect pitch/speed-wise but of course it sounds as it was recorded from London's tube, and this new version runs a bit too slow (around 3/4 of a tone)* but it's muuuch clearer than the other two. I guess this will be the best version once we remaster it... If the taper/transferrer allows a remaster. Do you have any info on that, @eddiemonsoon? The info file just forbids sharing it on any non-U2 sites.

*for this test I've compared A Day Without Me from the 3 recordings and to my own guitar tuned in Eb. The pitch/speed might vary within different songs or sides of the tape, it's quite usual with such old recordings.
  2. Feel free to change the speed/pitch etc. All I care about is it not turning up on the likes of guitars101, reliquary etc where they go through cash back links.

Ah so it's your own transfer? Double thanks then! We'll go for a remaster to try and make it the best source possible for this gig.
  4. yes
  5. Hero! Waiting for it. Thanks a lot.
  6. Remastered thanks to Sergio's hearing also now comes with added bonus track: a day without me from Birmingham 27 3 1983 if you could do the listening for me that would be good.

  7. Wow, very nice I have uploaded it and added it as a new source: 1982-12-04 - Birmingham, England - Odeon

Thank you very much for this It's lovely to have these lesser known gigs upgraded so they can be enjoyed properly after so many years. If you have a lineage description or any additional info feel free to provide it and I'll gladly update the database entry.

    U2start notes:
Our fellow u2starter eddiemonsoon did a fresh transfer from his Birmingham cassette. The sound is much better and clearer than in any of the other two pre-existing versions; whether this is due to it being a different source or a much lower generation casette we don't know.

Interestingly enough, the New Year's Daze version runs a bit too fast (the pitch is higher than it should, almost by a semitone), the Live From Birmingham 04.12.1982 runs almost perfect pitch/speed-wise but of course it sounds as it was recorded from London's tube, and this new version ran a bit too slow (around 3/4 of a tone)* but it was muuuch clearer than the others.

Eddiemonsoon took up on my suggestion to "remaster" and he did another transfer that now runs at a much better speed and pitch, making it truly listenable. The only downside is that this new source doesn't include A Celebration and the exceptional second Sunday Bloody Sunday.

    Taper notes:
While transferring I was constantly checking U2start and Pimm's book as I wasn't convinced I was listening to Birmingham at all until Bono mentioned it and because the other two sources are incomplete or crap it's hard to compare. But in the end it's definitely Birmingham.
Whether it's better because it's lower generation or a different source? is up to people with 100% hearing and a great deal of time or patience to decide. One thing is certain and that is that A Celebration and the second version of Sunday Bloody Sunday aren't included on the tape.

Bono coughs a few times during the show, says 'one more' a couple of times towards the end and sounds knackered but happy. There's a little jolt once owing to the tape flip but for a 36 year old tape (dated perfectly by a couple of uncirculating songs by a certain other act being tagged on the end of one side) - it's not bad going.

  8. I wish I could tell you more but i can't I know whose writing is on the cassette. It's not impossible that it's his recording just unlikely based on he lived in London. If we were talking about the Lyceum tape the night after then i'd say yeah that's likely his. I've looked for him on facebook and there's no one similar and no one putting similar tapes to the ones he did out on any other site (unless there's some really obscure Alarm site with all the VERY early London gigs I don't know about). So it could by a miracle be first generation and more likely is low generation as I also couldn't imagine him leaving a gig until it was obvious no one was coming back on.
  9. No problem, we'll leave it as is. Thanks for the info and for hunting him down The only real shame is that this new source misses the exceptional 2nd Sunday Bloody Sunday which marks its only use ever as a show closer.
