1. I've got it!
  2. U2 should be very scared about the success and criticial acclaim of this album, this album has thrust Coldplay back into the limelight and re-gained them the respect of critics again,

It goes to show that U2 need to move their sound forward and challenge their listeners if they want the re-gain respect of critics. U2 should take close note of this and should aim to follow the example that Coldplay have shown.

I honestly think U2 don't care.....Coldplay has had to change to keep people's interest. U2 don't need to.
  4. U2 definitely changed over the years to keep people's interest. That's why they hired Brian Eno in 1984. That's why they made Achtung Baby. That's why they made ATYCLB.

I am loving this new Coldplay album. I can't stop watching/listening to the Jordan performance. The music, combined with the Middle Eastern imagery, really takes me on a "musical journey", and makes me feels all kinds of things I've never felt before. After AHFOD, this is so refreshing.
  5. The new album has also grown on me. We're watching the Jordan videos with the kids - we all love it.

I think Church is one of their best songs. Dreamy, upbeat, no unneeded sugar. The song I like the most on the album, together with the title track and Daddy, and Arabesque a close fourth. Though I really like them all now (FWIW, Orphans is the one I like least, but it's by no means a bad song).
  6. Why should U2 be scared? They’re happy doing what they’ve been doing. I’m pretty sure they don’t sit there and go “shit man, Coldplay just released this awesome album. We need to up our game.” I’m not like the other “fans” that come on here and bash every new U2 album or song because it’s not what we expected it to be. It’s exactly what they expected it to be. Sorry, I didn’t mean to go on a rant here. It’s just irritating joining a website for U2 fans and see others who have apparently been long time U2 fans going “oh well, this song isn’t like Sunday Bloody Sunday or where the streets have no name so I’m not going to bother with it. They should go back to what they started playing. I’ve been a fan for 20 years now, of Coldplay and U2. They’re both very different bands with different approaches to their music and I love that.
  7. Are U2 and Coldplay even competing lol?
  8. Not sure if "compete" is the right term, but I'm pretty sure they (and/or their management or close circle) keep an eye on each other's albums and tours. Just like many other businesses bands. It's normal.

Indeed. AHFOD isn't a bad album by all means, but a few songs on it really have that 'elevator music' feel to it. EL is indeed more refreshing and also sounds more genuine.

    + 1 - word by word.
  11. I’m a huge Coldplay fan and have really enjoyed every album they’ve released...until this one.

I’m shocked at how boring it is. Chris Martin has never a great lyricist, but those short-comings are more easily glossed over when the rest of the songs have some punch and life to overshadow the words. On this album the insipid lyrics are front and center. This album sounds like mostly a collection of b and c-sides. They could have narrowed down the double-album to an EP and been better off.

The live performances sound decent though - the band puts on a solid performance as always. Too bad the songs themselves are so weak.
  12. I love the album as a whole listening experience it works well, favourite tracks are 'Church', 'Guns' and the title track. I think in time it will be seen as a great experimental album.
