1. I think it's all about the narrative. The way Bono was walking upwards in the barricage while the arena is lit up like stars is a metaphor for his brush with mortality, like he's going into the sky, into heaven, into the light. Then he kneels at the end and the barricage changes direction and he's brought back to earth. I also like this lyric, it's pretty intense:
"Oh Jesus if I’m still your friend, what the hell, what the hell you got for me?"
That's why for the first 3 or 4 shows they had Beautiful Day follow Lights of Home. Bono is still here, he's stronger than ever and he's feeling great, even though shit might happen, it's still a beautiful day!
Then they realized they needed more energy to follow the kinda slow Lights of Home, but they also had to find something that fits the narrative, that's where ABOY comes along.
After his health scare he feels like he is born again and that's why All because of you fits in the story & at the same time the song is a cool, powerhouse rock tune.
    "I'm alive
    I'm being born
I just arrived, I'm at the door
Of the place I started out from
    And I want back inside"

Sounds to me like Bono is fitting his faith to suit him and therefore comfort himself - like a lot of followers.

B-man you cannot sin whenever you like and seek redemption because it suits your own narrative - that ain't what faith is, man otherwise we're all in for an easy ride regardless of our behaviour.

And yes I am a non-believer - agnostic rather than atheist - but I can debate this just as I can any moralistic subject matter.

Curious what you mean by “you can sin whenever you like and seek redemption because it suits your own narrative”? Having a brush with mortality and questioning God in the midst of it all, before moving on and still proclaiming that it’s a beautiful day doesn’t seem like “sinning whenever you like”. It sounds like the sort of honesty you find all over the place in the biblical Psalms.

I agree with the point about Psalms. I recall seeing Bono in a video where he talked about loving the Psalms because of David's honesty.
  5. The Eugene Peterson series.

Also Google 'atu2 psalms' for IMHO Bono's greatest writing. The Introduction.
  6. Sorry TRE but I can't grasp where your comment is coming from, can you expand on it please.

My interpretation of the narrative is, having faced his own mortality and been given a second chance, he simply wants to know why and is giving thanks. The lyrics are asking, if I'm not meant to be in heaven yet, what have you got planned; for me God, what do you want me to do down here? There's nothing there to suggest he thinks he can sin and then ask for forgiveness. He's celebrating the chance to continue living and glorifying God.

    That’s the meaning 100%
  8. That is how I've always understood the narrative as well. also, all because of you was rotated with Gloria, which fits the celebration/devotion narrative well.
  9. this was a really good song live
the sound was way cool really loud
