  1. Yep. As of last year the record is still held by the Popmart screen, it's listed as such on the Guinness Book of Records site too.

do you have a link? I can't find it.. I doubt this is totally accurate..
  3. I assume you have to apply for the record.

OTR II or the Formation Tour would probably take the record. For the largest concert screen.
  4. From what I can find is that the JT '17 screen is bigger than popmart's:

200 feet wide by 45 feet vs. 150 by 50 for Popmart
  5. Back in the day, Amsterdam Arena was already built. I remember U2 choose to play Rotterdam because of the screen didnt fit beneath the roof.

Now i think it might be the arch or the olive as well, not per se the hight/length of the screen itself.

Where did you read that? Arena was (just) built yes, but can't imagine the PM screen wouldn't fit. Saw the screen in "De Kuip" and it fitted easily there...

Now for 360, I think they had to cut the top of so the roof could be closed..

PS. I just checked Amsterdam Arena is 77m high and De Kuip only 23m (?) Surprised me because they can both fit >50K people..

I didn't read that. It's what i remembered. I lived whith my parents and they had a subscription of the paper Algemeen Dagblad. Maybe i read it there, but not sure. Could also been Hitkrant. Not a reliable source though 😉
  9. I don’t really think the screen size prevented them from playing anywhere. They fit it in indoor stadiums in the US, Japan, and that one little arena in Australia.

But why play an open field in Cologne, when they could have played the stadium?

Why play a stadium in Rotterdam when they could’ve just paid some farmer to use his hay field?

I don’t understand the venue choices in Europe. Why set up the world’s most elaborate concert production at an unused airfield in Italy? or a harbor yard in Greece? This question has bothered me for years.

it's a complete different construction.. the pitch of the Johan Cruijff Arena is already several meters above street level and there is a big roof on top of the stadium and the stands are (quite) a bit steeper... also I think height of De Kuip should be around 30 meters (looking at the PopMart arch), maybe the old Kuip was 24?
About why they choose Rotterdam over Amsterdam? maybe they just felt more comfortable there as 12 of the previous 14 concerts in Holland were held there.. it was also the opening of the European tour, initially they planned to do 4 shows and they did some rehearsing the days prior to opening night, so they needed quite a few days of stadium rent.. logistically maybe Rotterdam also had some advantages over Amsterdam.. so all in all it could be just a combination of reasons why they picked Rotterdam over Amsterdam. It was the right choice anyway!

    It is a bit odd.

I assume they must have got a good deal. There are still concerts at airports in Europe... The Rolling Stones and Muse have played at Letnany Airport in the Czech Republic in the last two years.

And maybe in those secondary markets and countries they had not played before, they were willing to skimp on venues to save some money. Or there were just no stadiums in good condition? 🤷‍♂️

I know, but the Amsterdam Arena is quite steep/high. The JT screen came up to first ring or something.

I think the main reason is that De Kuip was the venue of choice for concerts at that time. and they played it in '93 as well. Arena was open for less than a year and was only starting hosting its first concerts. And I don't know when U2 started booking the venues..

    But I'm just guessing here..
