  1. I read somewhere they wanted to play at stadio San Paolo in Naples, but it was unavailable because there were football matches already scheduled, I guess that was one of the reasons they chose festival grounds over stadiums

I know, but the Amsterdam Arena is quite steep/high. The JT screen came up to first ring or something.

I think the main reason is that De Kuip was the venue of choice for concerts at that time. and they played it in '93 as well. Arena was open for less than a year and was only starting hosting its first concerts. And I don't know when U2 started booking the venues..

    But I'm just guessing here..

it was actually the other way around.. the Arena hosted all the big (international) acts in the 2nd half of '96 and on while De Kuip only had U2 between '96 and '03. No, they might not book the venues themselves but they have something to say..

Well that's interesting. I know they had problems with Italian promoters during Zoo TV. Other artists also had problems like this with the Italian concert business. The Rolling Stones didn't even play Italy on Voodoo Lounge or Bridges to Babylon tours because they were sick of getting fucked over.

I also read once that U2's management didn't want U2 to play Sarajevo, and were trying to get them to play Basel, Switzerland on that same date.
  4. Hm ok, good one. I stand corrected then

But the screen couldn't have been the reason they didn't choose the Arena then. If you see pics of the (larger) JT17 screen in there, Popmart's screen would probably not even go beyond the first ring..

    Where did you read that?

still a lot. And also 23 years ago.
  9. I'm sure that's what U2 management thought. That's why Pop is so overplayed these days.
  10. I really can't remember now where I read that. The Sarajevo gig was kind of Bono's (and maybe the rest of the band's) pet project that he was determined to see to fruition. Management wasn't for it, because it was going to cause them to lose money, and were really pushing for Basel instead. I'll try to find where I read that.
