Maybe you're right however they would still have a lot of pro shot footage they could release and remaster when they were making Rattle and Hum they filmed a good few gigs,Lovetown had the Sydney and Dublin gigs filmed ,Popmart had a few televised gigs from South America they also filmed gigs in Canada the US and Europe that were partly shown ,Vertigo tour had all the South American concerts filmed for the 3D film also Milan and a few in Europe, even on The recent Joshua Tree Tour they filmed Mexico, Brazil and Holland and Ireland and they are just a few of what comes to mind ,nothing stopping them from putting them up on YouTube or their own website.

First of all, with the JT30 box it really seemed like the vaults may be being cracked open with the MSG release (even though it was incomplete). Showed that not only will they release that stuff digitally, they'll go so far as to press it to vinyl.

I guess they figured that since no singular JT'87 show had been released, they might as well pick one and make it "the one." But even if that were the case, why not release Slane with the ATYCLB boxset? It's so clearly the fan favorite U2 release, ESPECIALLY between that and Boston...Possibly because the arena sound gave them a more preferable mix?
That MSG gig had already been released prior to the anniversary release. I don’t know if there’s any difference in quality between the two though. We do also have the Paris live album that is available on iTunes, so MSG isn’t their only show for the JT tour.

As for Slane, I go back to my previous post about possible exclusivity with the fanclub. It had already been released on CD there and it’s the only reason I can think of why it hasn’t been released for the general public in audio only format. If that was the case, then Boston really is their easiest/only option.

It is disappointing that the only live releases available in digital stores and on streaming services are essentially UABRS and Paris ‘87. I suppose we can count Boston too now on the deluxe reissue of ATYCLB. But no sniff of Sydney, Slane, Mexico, Point Depot etc which we know have all existed as live audio releases at one point.

When had MSG been released? Not doubting you but curious, not sure I knew of that. You are correct that they could have simply ripped Paris to vinyl for JT, good call on that as well.

Another good catch about fanclub exclusivity as their reasoning for Boston. That would make me wonder about Zoo, PopMart, and Vertigo's potential releases since those have all been released "exclusively" to fanclub

MSG had only been released on Wolfgang’s vault which isn’t really a commercial release. ISHFWILF from that gig is on R&H though.

Record Store Day is the perfect opportunity to release little EPs like their Virtual Road series, or do a live-single series like the fanclub Joshua Tree singles from a few years back. Instead, they've made it clear they'll putz through the catalogue from any uninteresting starting point and throw crap at the wall.

Anyway, with all that being said, here's what I could realistically envision them releasing in the future:

Red Rocks: a mammoth boxset in 2023 including the entire concert's audio for the first time and possibly a cleaned scan / digitally repaired remaster of the damaged footage.

Joshua Tree era: We've got all we'll ever get

LoveTown era: Point Depot could be a fanclub vinyl release

ZooTV era: Sydney on vinyl for AB30. No other show releases.

PopMart era: If, and only if, they decide to do a Pop box, Mexico could see vinyl. No other shows.

Elevation era: I would've thought MSG3 would've finally seen the light of day especially after reading about it in Pimms book recently. The fact that the box came and went answers this one.

Vertigo era: Chicago on vinyl for the Bomb anniversary. Truly think U23D could see the light of day again in the super deluxe, or at the very least a few tracks as bonus features on a DVD.

360 era: We've got all we'll ever get and that's more than enough. I say that as someone who loves this tour. They'll never celebrate the anny of NLOTH.

IE / EI era: a "Songs of" box set will come out in 10-20 years time from the original release and include live versions of album cuts from the tours, half of which we'll have heard already officially released, but half will be new. Could also potentially see a "Live from the E Stage" RSD release compiling random E-stage performances from the IE tour and possibly Acrobat.

JT30 era: The rumored movie and that's it, no audio releases beyond the fanclub singles.

I think that’s very pessimistic for zoo tv. Only 1 show ever released from what many see as their greatest tour? At the very least I think we’ll get another show in audio. I think Popmart as well they could give us something different. Because Sydney and Mexico City have been released with the fanclub and the boxsets recently have been both cd and vinyl options I can’t see them using they shows as the cd set would then devalue the fanclub sets and I can’t see them offering they shows in stand alone vinyls or in a vinyl boxset with no cd box set option.

Yep, the point was more that it wasn’t a shock when it was announced, we knew it existed along with the other recordings. If they’d pulled something truly unique out of the bag then I think we’d have been more curious.

Yeah I get what you’re saying now. In fact I think any future live release will be like that, a show that is already out there in soundboard quality or that’s already been broadcast or part of the gig has been released somewhere. I don’t expect to ever have an official release that we’ve either never heard or is only currently available as an audience recording.

  8. I firmly believe the only other show they have fully filmed and even somewhat edited together is the RFK stadium show. If they were going to do anything with it they would've made that move for AB20 instead of releasing Sydney for a third time (fourth if you were in the fanclub and got the audio). It's not on their radar.

edit: forgot about adelaide but they're not going to pick a show from 10 days prior to the one they've got officially released with an identical setlist.

They should release a double 2 CD of Slane 81 and 01. Actually 4 CD. We never did get an official October live document.

I think they could still release that Yankee stadium show(s) in audio. They put love is blindness from one of the nights on the stay single and between broadcasts and the tv special there’s various performances from both nights. Dublin has had 2 songs released from it and was broadcast I think that could be released and Stockholm I think would be an easy enough one for them to put together. I agree with you about Adelaide, too similar to Sydney.

    Stockholm too right?
  12. Edge said they will be "showcasing some unheard, live recordings" on U2 X Radio. It's been a year or so and has anything been aired yet? I think they plan for the station to be around for 5 years or so but I think the only recordings so far have been the Apollo and Boston show.
