The funny thing I guess about underrated is it as an opinion about an opinion. We’re saying that we think the song isn’t liked enough or rated highly enough probably based on how good we think the song is. It’s just a way of disagreeing with the majority view really.
To me underrated means ( for example Acrobat or Please) is highly appreciated in fanbase but totally without impact outside fanbase.
But in overal you're right. Usually people think "for me personally it's great but others don't think so do I'm gonna call it underrated because they don't understand it" (same goes with overrated)
  2. That's another way to think of it, and I kinda understand it too. But if we go by this definition, around 60-70% of U2's catalogue is underrated because they're very good songs that the general audience won't ever hear
  3. I wouldn’t say Miami is the most underrated because it’s the most disliked. Or gets the most criticism. I think a song somewhere in the middle of the pack is probably most underrated because you’ll probably get a lot of people that like the song in question but don’t really give it enough attention when it comes to commenting on it or even listening time maybe isn’t what it could be. Then there will be the general public that would maybe like the song but just haven’t given it a chance. Most underrated is probably the song that most people would be willing to concede doesn’t get enough praise, Miami isn’t that.

You may be right, but I still reckon, say mathematically speaking, that it has to be Miami given the amount of evidence we have of, shall we say, disregard for it. But leaving Miami aside, I think you raise an interesting point or rather highlight an interesting pair of strands in the whole rating business, i.e. 1. what might be regarded as the 'collective' fan rating of a song and 2. the general public rating. Very difficult to find a U2 song with almost a universal acceptance of its rating. I'd venture that perhaps only the likes of New Year's Day fits the bill; its greatness accepted by the fanbase - casual and diehard, well like by the general public or non U2 fans, both casual listener and the indie congnoscenti. Perhaps an argument or topic for another day.
  7. songs that i consider "underrated" because i don't see the fanbase praising and i feel like an alien when i say i like them much more than the fanbase "loved" songs.

    the refugee
    trip through your wires
some days are better than others
    do you feel loved
    miami
    the playboy mansion
    new york
    stand up comedy

We’ll, that is indeed an appropriate list of songs. Aside from “Do You Feel Loved” and maybe “New York” I don’t particularly like any of them.
  9. Quite surprised hardly anyone mentioned Lemon. One of the greatest studio tracks ever recorded by U2 in my opinion. Everything is just in the place where it's supposed to be, and it has a great dance feeling. And then, of course, there's the falsetto

Those are not my favourite, but I like these songs. I don't know why The Refugee, Miami, The Playboy Mansion or The Showman are classified as "bad songs". Taste and colours...

    For me :
    Love Come Tumbling
    Wake Up Dead Man
    The Troubles
    Love Is Blindness
    (not really the fanbase )
