If Streets wasn't as godly as it was then I don't think I would revisit 2001 with any frequency whatsoever. The staging remains masterful. The houselights start, the warm lighting versus any real colour, lack of reliance on screens. They absolutely nailed the brief 100% in making big shows intimate in a way they haven't been able to replicate in 2005/15/18.

Elevation from this footage shows it best. Clearly an arena in the house lights but it's an out and out club gig as soon as the lights go out. Flick forward for a god tier Streets intro as well.

I was at that Toronto Elevation gig.
  2. You saw a great Streets. I didn’t think an awful lot of the rest of the show however but I’ll always revisit that crazy Bono improv in Streets.

Did a blind man film this? I've never seen such poor professional footage ,the presenter walking with the band was lucky he didn't get a slap from one of them surprised he was allowed do it as the band use it to get in the zone and focus on the gig .

That’s what makes it great. Such unfettered access for whatever reason.
  5. Wow, that performance is incredible! Imo, the Elevation tour had the best version of Streets, with Bono running round the heart, the best guitar tone and not to mention the crowd going nuts when the whole band kicks in. Wish I could’ve seen it for myself!

Maybe it was the Blind Boys of Alabama?

That's Rick the Temp at the beginning. Canadian music fans will know him, he was from my city. He was a VJ back in tha day. And George of course who has gone on to bigger things.

    1. I think Elevation is one of their most consistent tours. Only a handful of the shows were unbelievable, but the ones that were are among U2's all-time greatest performances. There are some nights of the tour with lesser energy, but on the whole, its a good show. Not a lot of variation to keep coming back to, but it doesn't surprise me Ger. I'm the same way with it.

    2. I'm surprised you like that Streets intro. I thought the Vertigo tour intros were always much crisper from The Edge and therefore a bit more powerful - but everyone hates those because Bono talked over it most nights. Here he's just sort of going "whoa-oa-oa" (albeit hitting good notes) but it still muddies it for me!

    3. Watching them do the walk-out is actually my favorite part of this, even though its brief. Something we almost never get to see from this era or prior.
  8. Streets if the era is it’s simplicity. Simple lighting, an often lovely segue and pumped pumped crowds every night. I also liked Edges tone and power in Vertigo Streets but the lack of flash and Bono just killed the whole thing for me.

The first New York show post 9/11 is my favourite show from 2001.
  9. Streets during the elevation tour probably were probably my 2nd favourite versions of the songs behind only zoo tv. So much passion and energy put into the songs. That’s what made a lot of the hits so good on the elevation tour. Bono was putting 110% into the songs. The results weren’t always good, he was still trying falsetto’s at times that were off putting in songs, Real Thing stands out. But songs like WOWY, One, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and the one we’re talking about Streets, probably had some of there best performances ever on the elevation tour.

is there a good example of his falsetto attempt in Real Thing?
  11. Chicago 16/05/01 he starts off singing ‘take me higher’ low twice then does some bizarre sounding falsetto attempt. I’ve actually just listened to other versions from the tour and he just sings ‘take me higher’ low which works much better. I’m sure there were some unconvincing falsetto attempts during Mysterious Ways as well, can’t pin point which version though or if it was just in general, I’m thinking a weak ‘love to love you baby’ snippet maybe. I really didn’t like his attempts at falsetto’s back then.
