1. Not so sure about this, sound more like a healthy 'rebake' of U2's entire past.. At a moment where they could have gone leftfield and do something new/surprising
  2. Maybe this has been speculated, maybe not. I'm not as current with my U2 as I once was. The initial announcement / rumour was for a "new album of old songs".....what are everyone's thoughts that maybe it's songs that never made it to the album phase? They'll brush off something from different album sessions (not sure how far back they'd go) that were not right for that time, but they couldn't let go of? I could imagine everyone's excitement since from what I've gathered is that we're looking at a collection of existing songs, re-recorded. Probably not, but this makes me happy.

It’s the 40 songs that Bono is using as chapter headings in his book. Those are being described as U2 songs, and the example we have so far is “Out of Control”.

The press release for the book states, “ Surrender’s subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book’s forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song”

They may dig a bit for those, but I expect most will be recognizable song titles.

Are you in the know that they have reworked 40 songs?
  5. He's probably more in the know than me! As I said, I haven't kept up with it as much as I used to, particularly between albums. And yes, I completely acknowledge that it likely will have a huge tie-in with the Memoir. Call it wishful thinking. Surely we as U2 fans can still do that
  6. So...I am totally confused...which isn't too difficult at this stage....Bono's Memoirs are a book with 40 chapters each named after a U2 song. Check. The album titled Songs of Surrender is where it gets fuzzy. Are all 40 songs / chapters going to be on the Songs of Surrender album? Are all 40 songs being reworked in different arrangements? Or are a selection of 10 or so songs from Bono's Memoirs being reworked in different arrangements? Thanks for clarifying. If we get some kind of new music great. I'm not a really a fan of the band reworking 40 legacy songs which sounded fine the way they were originally presented. Just MHO. Thanks again.

As I've mentioned before, it is almost a requirement for rock artists to revisit their catalog and "reinvent" their own songs. Sting had writer's block, and has all kinds of rehash albums out there, including the obligatory symphony album. I always dreaded the day U2 did this, and it finally came. I can't believe that they would take the time to re-record 40 songs. Maybe 10-20 and make a standard version, and then the deluxe version for the die hards. I already had to see them follow the most overblown trend ever in Auto Tune, and now the remake album. Rod Stewart made about ten or so of those, though I believe all were Motown, or other standards until finally writing some new music. I hope U2 can avoid the trends, and just make a few more albums before calling it a day.

Record company probably pushing some sort of compilation as they might be reluctant to get behind new material as it's a hard sell in today's climate for established acts particularly if the band aren't ready to tour it until the dust settles with the ongoing pandemic , nostalgia sells as we've seen with The Joshua Tree Tour and various remastered boxsets ,I don't think it's a path U2 necessarily want to take or need to take financially but they know whatever new material they release will probably make very little impact on the various music platforms which we've seen on the last 3 albums apart from 2 or 3 songs which had reasonable success.
  9. i hate it when bands 'revisit' or remaster stuff

i understand that 'they' would have made it differently at the time and it didn't come across not the way they intended it to - no i don't actually so fuck off with that shite

you took forever to rehearse and record and produce the bloody track - of course it sounds like the way you wanted it to

they go on about POP and i can understand that they ran out of time with that one, but fuck me i'm glad they did because the album sounds awesome even with the 'unfinished' songs

let songs stand as they are - what are you gonna do? ask fucking shakespeare to attach a trigger warning to titus andronicus? ask michelangelo to give david a bigger nob? edvard to alter the scream for a new woke audience?

a band's history is just that - they are the songs they recorded and they were the times and they were the production techniques available - it's all real and honest and has integrity and that gives it its charm

re: i too hate 'big band' fucking orchestra shite - a lot of prog bands did this and it never improved the tracks it was just a 'show off' thing that screams 'look at our egos - please look at our egos'
  10. +1

I tend to agree with this - even with the swearing

But, since they seem to be determined to do it, at least what I'm hoping for is that they dig a bit deeper and at least rework some songs that they haven't overplayed to death. I couldn't care less about reworked versions of One, WOWY, Beautiful Day, etc. Not that I'm terribly passionate about reworked versions of A Day Without Me, Velvet Dress or God Part II but at least they would pique my interest.

    Saltiest post of the year!
