1. I know, I know, I don't have the money for good equipment now, but I still want to try to record a show
  2. You can get a Zoom H2, Olympus DM650 or Tascam DR-05 for 50€ or less in your nearest second hand local store or on ebay - and the 3 of them will yield much better results than any smartphone. Gone are the days where getting into recording shows meant spending a fortune.

Thanks! I see they are not that expensive. Another question, I'm not sure if it was in the guide, but when I want to record a show, can I still jump around and sing a long if I have GA tickets and the audio will still be fine?
  4. Define "fine"

Edit: you'll get a fine recording of you singing over the music, bumps and crackle from moving around excessively, etc. Shitty recording in my book but it's all about what you want out of the experience

Haha. I do that most of the times, but I don't take the hobby as seriously as a proper taper. It all comes down to two main factors: 1) which results you wanna get, and 2) what is the purpose of the recording.

I tape shows primarily for myself and I never let the taping interfere with my enjoyment of the show: if I'm at a show of a band I really really like, I'd rather not tape it than tape it and not enjoy it to the max. I still have gotten some interesting recordings, decent if you ask me, and still far from "pro" recordings from dedicated tapers like Hoserama, bedoc, one8ung, etc. SeeHear below a few examples:

    Spoiler (click to toggle)

If you listen to them you'll hear me singing from time to time (sometimes quite loudly) and some stereo artifacts/sound drops due to jumping, dancing, etc. If results like this are acceptable to you then the answer to your question is yes, you can still jump around and sing along.

That being said, all those recordings were made with external microphones and NOT just with a recorder like the ones I suggested before. That makes a big difference - you would wear the microphones in your glasses or hat/cap and still they'll capture the music sound more or less fine whether you dance/jump or not. But if you try to tape a show with just a handheld recorder, it will most probably be located in your trousers/shirt pocket, or in some kind of bag; whenever you jump or move around, you'll get a big amount of fffggghhhhssshhhfffggg noise coming from the rubbing of the cloth against the recorder, making the recording completely unusable. That is a no-go.

The only alternative would be placing the recorder somewhere else (in a fence, seat, etc) but then again that's usually not an option when you're in the middle of GA...

As I said before: it's a compromise. It's up to you
  6. Someone has to sacrifice and put some dedication into his recording... don't know why it always has to be the same persons

Yeah the reason why I want to record shows is also just for me to have a collection of all the shows I went to. And yes same for me, I go to a concert to enjoy the music and have a great time. So I have to think how I am going to combine those two. Have a fun time and record a decent sounding show...

I don't want to start an argument but nobody forces you to be that someone, do they? There is no such thing as an "obligation" or "responsability" unless someone bought a ticket for you to go to a show and tape it, or unless you're a part of a group of tapers and there are plans to get a particular number and type of recordings - then there's no excuses to stand still and get the best recording possible. But otherwise? Going by yourself and taping it for yourself primarily? C'mon! Live and let live.
  9. Never said that someone forces me...
