  4. There’s been different views on here about a Vegas residency and whether it’s a sign of decay in an artist’s career or something not to be sneered at. The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper has an interview today with Sting, who is about to tour here, and it includes this quote about his planned shows in Vegas:

“It was never something that I ever thought I’d end up doing because of the stigma that used to be attached to it. But it’s no longer there as everybody plays in Vegas. We’re all doing these residencies. But they’re not really that, you play eight shows in a row. And then you leave. In the old days Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra were tied out to the place, as was Elvis. Not so now.”

I suspect U2 view it the same way.
  5. I’ve only got 1 concern about vegas at this point and that is any building delays also leading to the band delaying releasing a new album. I think the new album and a tour for that in 2024 should be the priority and nothing should stand in the way of that but if they want to do vegas prior to all that I’ve nothing against it but also not very excited at this point just with how SOS is sounding even though that wouldn’t be the only focus.

If any band can delay an album due to a delayed construction project then it’s U2.
  7. To me there is nothing inherently “wrong” about a band doing a residency whether it be in Las Vegas, New York, London or wherever.

What I find lame is when a residency (or any tour) is centered around past albums and greatest hits. I was always proud of U2 for avoiding falling into the trap of touring off past albums. I appreciated that each tour was headlined by a new album and new material. The 360 Tour eventually devolved into a mostly greatest hits show but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because at least they tried to feature NLOTH material for the first legs of the tour.

The recent JT tours I found disappointing as U2 had unfortunately succumbed entirely to a tour centered on an old album.

I’m withholding judgement on the Vegas residency until we know the bands plan for sure. But if the residency centers on AB and re-worked old songs and not a new album, then, yes, in my opinion they should be embarrassed by their Vegas residency. Bono will have morphed into Fat Elvis.
  8. Yep, that’s why it’s a serious and I think legitimate concern of mine because there is absolutely no guarantee this building is going to be ready when they’ve estimated, that’s all it is, an estimate. And I would feel more confident than not the band would hold off the new album and tour to get the vegas shows played. Hopefully if there were to be any delays it would only be a couple of months and wouldn’t change the timescale of the 2024 tour. A new album coming out in February or March instead of December or January shouldn’t make much of a difference to tour dates next year I’d hope.
  9. Apparently willie is testing a small scale version of the sphere in Burbank?

All I really care about in all of this is that U2 are able to tour stadiums behind a new album by the summer of 2024. That’s really our best case scenario at this point. Because if not, then it becomes summer of 2025 pretty quick! The next album’s release date doesn’t matter so much to me.

I really feel like this Vegas residency (and Bono’s solo tour) are only going to keep us from moving on to the next phase of U2. If the Vegas stuff is postponed to 2024, that pushes back the entire album/tour timeline.
