1. Every month we put a U2 fan in the spotlights, the fan of the month December of 2023 is user Sotie. Read along for the interview we had with this U2 fan.

"For me, U2 concerts are more than songs; it's when the band and the crowd become one unforgettable experience."

Tell us something about yourself, who are you and what do you do for a living?
My name is Emiel and I'm from the Netherlands, living in Vlissingen, which is a coastline featured in a sort of homecoming videoclip. I'm a physics teacher at an MBO school, have a girlfriend, and three children.

How did you become a fan of U2, tell us how it happened?
For my 11th birthday, I got the brand new album October. From that day on, I was a fan and played the album every day.

Your first U2 show took place when you were 16, what was it like?
It was overwhelming, my first time in a stadium. I went there on a bus trip after waiting two days in front of the post office to get a ticket. The connection between U2 and the crowd was amazing. They felt at home away from home, as Bono told the crowd. Afterwards, we sang "40" the whole trip back to Vlissingen. A night I would never forget.

You have seen U2 on every tour since, what makes it that you do not want to miss out on a U2 tour?
For me, U2 is not only about the music. It's about how they are as individuals and as a band. They always want to connect with their audience. It feels like they are genuinely happy to perform for you. But of course, it all starts with their music.

What are 3 songs that U2 should play at every show and why?
Hmm, that's hard to say, but live I would say Bad, Streets, and 40. Bad, because of the connection in the stadium and how the song is built up. Streets, because the song feels like a train accelerating from zero to a hundred. 40, for me as a fan from (almost) the beginning, it's when the band and crowd merge, and the crowd keeps singing the song until they leave the stadium, giving you goosebumps.

Your latest U2 show was in Vegas, what was it like? Do you prefer to see U2 in a setting like this or do you prefer a regular tour?
I was at the show with Lady Gaga. Standing in the middle just 10 yards away from the stage was amazing. The venue, the band on fire—just wow! From my perspective, the venue is absolutely amazing for concerts. I think they couldn't ask for more than U2 opening the Sphere. It's not possible on a regular tour, but I can't wait for a normal tour. I think Willie Williams will still make it great, maybe a little less spectacular.

If you could only hear one more U2 song for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
Mwah, that's a difficult question. If I had to pick one, then it's Bad, I guess.

What is your favorite U2 book, and why?
U2 by U2, for the first time, the whole story in their own words. Need I say more?

How different is U2 compared to other artists that you like?
U2 is always themselves, not acting on stage or trying to play the rock 'n roll artist. That authenticity is what I like about the guys.

What are your hobbies and interests away from U2, musical or otherwise?
I enjoy sports a lot, playing soccer and tennis. And I collect vinyl, especially from U2. I've almost got everything from first pressings to special editions and promo items—so far more than 150 different items.

  2. Thanks, nice interview!!
    I would also pick "Bad"!
