1. I've only recently learned to harness the power of Firefox extensions and pimp out my web browsing skills.

One of the best extensions (for both Firefox and Internet Explorer) is called FoxyTunes:

    http://www.foxytunes.com/

It inserts a bar on the bottom of your browser window that controls most media players (iTunes for me) as you surf the net. Play, pause, next & forward, drag the cursor to change the timeline position, all the standard stuff.

But beyond that, you can also click one button and search any of the following (or all simultaneously) by either "song title," "artist," or "album":
    -iTunes Music Store
    -Wikipedia article
    -All Music Guide review
    -Amazon.com CDs
    -YouTube videos
    -Flickr photos
    -Yahoo search
    -eBay search
    -eMusic.com search
-OR (here's the kicker)... a single tab of FoxyMusic Planet with links to most of the above, PLUS: the lyrics to the song, YouTube videos of the song (yes, even alternate live versions), AND links to last.fm and Pandora similar artists (if you're not familiar, they're both websites where you enter in your favorite music and it tries to expose you to similar artists that you will hopefully like)

So, if I'm looking up "Bad" I can click "search all" and the lyrics pop up as well as a few versions from YouTube, plus links to U2 albums from Amazon.com, and similar artists... you get the idea.

And yes, it works on bootlegs (obviously, though, it will give you lyrics for the album version), but as long as you have the artist and song title listed correctly it will work.

    Enjoy!
  2. One exception:

If you listen to, say, "Sweet Dreams / Wedding March / Angel of Harlem" from Zoo Europa (Dublin ZooTV 1993-08-28), it will not work b/c the title doesn't match up to their database.

However, I doubt you guys will use this for U2 a whole lot since I guess you probably know the lyrics, etc.

But if you're new to an artist, it is a TON of useful new information.

Just be careful. You could become addicted... Wait a minute... we're U2 fans... and we download bootlegs... and we post in the U2start forum every day... wow, too late, I'm guess I'm already on crack and heroin together
  3. Fantastic extension.
  4. I agree with you and with your description of the FoxyTunes extension. I downloaded that a few weeks ago and I liked it very much, even if the botton to go to FoxyTunes Planet has been added to the extension only in a second time, 'cause FoxyTunes Planet is a site in the BETA fase.
Anyway I recently passed to Internet Explorer 7, because Firefox doesn't work at all with Windows Live Messenger (which I use everyday) and because it works not very well on some sites (I knew that U2START forum's smiles move only after I begin to use IE 7, 'cause with my updated Firefox they didn't), even if I find it faster than IE.
Apart from my own situation, I suggest to use Firefox with FoxyTunes extention enabled, 'cause it's very useful and also funny!

You mentioned elsewhere that you use a Mac (I too run an iBook G4, as well as a Mac mini) - do you find Firefox or Internet Explorer better than Safari? I've never realised there was another option. Is it a freeware or do you have to pay?

This Foxytunes sounds cool and I'll give it a go if you think it's worth it.

Microsoft discontinued Internet Explorer for Macintosh (and I don't miss it!)

I've honestly never really had a problem with Safari. It's a very sold browser.

But I started to hear people raving about Mozilla Firefox so I checked it out. I got used to the interface and never went back. Yes it is absolutely FREE. You can get it here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

What makes Firefox stand out so much is that it is an "open source" application. Basically, it started out NOT as a product to be sold and profited from, but more as a "labor of love" for programmers to make a very secure, fast, powerful browser. (It profits almost all off of donations and merchandise.) What "open source" means is that any programmer around the world can take the source code and offer their own improvements on it. It's the same theory behind Wikipedia (an "open source" encyclopedia).

So, you start out by downloading a "base" version of Firefox which is overseen by the Mozilla development group... then you can customize it by downloading as many user-created, add-ons or "extensions" as you like. And if you don't like any given extension, you can uninstall it with no damage to the rest of the program.

Some of these extensions are more useful than others, depends on your browsing habits. Some of them include:
    -"FoxyTunes" (which I described above).
-"BetterSearch" - this is amazing! when you search Google (or whatever), you get a small thumbnail image previewing each return.
-"ColorfulTabs" - make each new tab a random new color.
-"URL Fixer" - If you misspell a website like "ww.u2start.cmo" it will correct it.
-"VideoDownloader" - download videos from YouTube
-"Nuke Anything Enhanced" - remove ANYTHING from a webpage (unwanted images, blocks of texts, ads) and refresh the page to get them back
-"Viamaic foXpose" - Click on one icon and you get a snapshot of all your currently open tabs. Click on any one and it takes you to that tab.
-"Adblock Plus" - enhanced pop-up blocker

I've also never had a problem with Safari, but you piqued my interest so I'm going to give this a go! If there's no posts for a while I've cocked things up and had to re-boot or something!

Thanks for all the info and the quick reply.

    djrlewis,

have you tried out Firefox? what do you think?
  9. djrlewis,

    Hi,

Yes, I've downloaded it this afternoon and I'm using it now. I'm still a little lost with it (I had tabs coming up before, I don't now) but I like the speed and it does seem quite intuitive.

I also managed to get Foxytunes on which is very cool, but no time as yet for any of the other add-ons. Like the sound of the Google pop-up one.

Thanks again for the info, I'll be sure to bug you if I get stuck!!

Been using Firefox for a while now and love it but I have a couple of random questions I wondered if you had answers to?

In Safari, if you want to download a link to an mp3, you can simply Ctrl-Click and an option to download file will come up. This doesn't seem to work in Firefox. Is there another way?

Also, if I wanted to download a video in YouTube, I can Alt-Apple-A and a window comes up (called Analysis I think) that allows you to click on the file and it just downloads it. Very useful, and again, doesn't seem to be present in Firefox. I know about KeepVid but that is long-winded compared to above and wondered if there was an alternative? (Or is it just Apple's brilliance?!)

If anyone else has thoughts too they would be much appreciated!
