no joy yet again. getting too pissed off. gna leave it for a while. with this pack media player says 'codec aqquired' then 'windows media player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file'. As far as i'm aware the files are standard avi files

Avi is just a container, it may carry audio/video data in virtually any compression scheme.
