  1. Every month we put an U2 fan in the spotlights, the fan of the month July 2010 is user gng007. Read along for the interview we had with a huge U2 fan from Salt Lake City!

    Tell us something about yourself, who are you and what do you do for a living?
    I am 29 years old and am working and living in Salt Lake City, UT. I have an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Utah, a graduate degree in accounting from the University of Southern California, and am currently in law school at the University of Utah. It's summer now though (yayayayayayay), so I spend my days working for a small law firm downtown.

    What would you like to ask U2 if you got the chance to?
    I'd like to ask the band if I could buy them a drink and sit down and shoot the shit with them in the corner of a nice club.

    Are you very disappointed with the show cancellations? Did you lose a lot of money?
    I'm VERY disappointed about the cancelations. I bought 8 tickets total to the show: 2 for me and my wife, 2 for my brother and his wife who were schedule to be in SLC on vacation during the week of the opening show in SLC, and 4 for my two best friends at school and their wives. Everybody was so excited to be going to the show and I was so excited to be giving the gift of U2! We're all hoping that the band comes back next summer. But second question: no, i didn't lose a lot of money ... it will only be lost if U2 doesn't come back.

    What are your tour plans now?
    Just wait for an announcement ... hopefully they'll be back.

    Where do you most prefer to listen to U2?
    In my car.

    In your opinion, what has been U2's defining moment and why?
    For me U2's defining moment happens about once every couple months when I'm in the car, stereo turned up, and the music makes me feel really good. I assume the same type of moment is ocurring all over the world every day.

    Which U2 song do you feel the most "attached" to, or means the most for you?
    I love Stuck in a Moment because for me it is a song about reminding yourself to stay positive and not dwell on the downers in life. "get yourself together ...!" I also love Ultraviolet and about fell off of my chair when I read that Ultraviolet was going to be in the setlist during the first leg of 360 (saw them in Vegas).

    What do you think of Edge's performance with Muse at Glastonbury?
    Haven't seen it. But I will check it out - I like Muse.

    Does anyone in your family or one of your friends like U2? If so, did they introduce you to U2, or did you "convert" them?
    The first time I remember hearing U2 (I'd probably heard them prior to this, but this is my first distinct memory), I was sitting in my friends basement and I was about 10 or 11 and he put his brother's cd in the boom box and he started singing along "when you get to the bottom you go back to the top ..." and I remember he was holding his hands as if he were holding a microphone to his mouth and he screamed "and I see you agaaaaaaain, ya ya yaaaaaaaa." I thought he was nuts. I became huge fan in high school. Most people where I'm from enjoy U2's music, but I was a bit over the top. And I loved it .. and still love it. When fun things were happening to me while I was a teenager I was always listening to U2, so I guess I'm sort of like Pavlov's dog now - when U2 plays, i'm happy.

    What are your hobbies and interests away from U2, musical or otherwise?
    I really like to play basketball and softball. I'm in leagues this summer in both sports playing with friends and classmates. I drink a fountain diet coke and eat a donut from the 7-11 by my house every morning for breakfast. I am an avid college football fan and have season tickets to the University of Utah football games. I just bought a road bike today (http://www.cannondale.com/gbr/eng/Products/2007/Road/Details/1888-7RA92D-CAAD9-Optimo-2) and am so excited to take up that sport this summer.

    I am not religious, although I was raised that way (Utah, of course) ... which is sort of odd as it relates to U2 because I used to find religion in U2's music, but I've since grown away from that and found that U2's music applies to me on a very non-religous level. More of a sort of personal moral level ... and often in an ammoral, in your face, good base line, rock level - which is sometimes the best level to be at.
