Comments: U2 performed for World AIDS Day in Times Square as "U2 Minus 1". Because of his recent bicycle accident, Bono was under doctor's orders to not perform, so Chris Martin of Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen took turns fronting the band. U2 opened the show with two songs, fronted by Martin; Carrie Underwood then played a set with Edge on guitar for one song; Kanye West performed the third set; and U2 with Bruce Springsteen closed proceedings with another two-song set. "I think people understand now that I'm not religious, they understand that I'm nearly anti-religion.. when I talk of religion I'm talking about the force that's cut Ireland in two. I'm not religious at all, but I do believe in God very strongly, and I don't believe that we just exploded out of thin air, I can't believe it."
- Bono, 1982
