Show Notes:
I wasn't there, but folks I know that were there said this show and perhaps Chi2 were the best of the Chicago stand.
Certainly some funny band goof-ups, but powerful show on the American 2015 run.

Recording Notes:
Bit of a crazy adventure in taping for this show. While one of the main crew members was off having fun with security,
the rest of the crew had to pick up the slack. Talltaper pulling a good aud on the floor and BigBen running the wireless rig,
using gear supplied by sharebear and datfly. So team effort all around, but lions share of the credit goes to the tapers.

Mixing Notes:
I did a couple mixes of this tour with the intention of rivaling official releases. With that goal in mind and many many hours
logged, I was able to complete four mixes over nine months. Feeling burned out, and with some friendly encouragement,
I changed gears and decided to focus on making "Sharebear Scratch Mixes". I could spend a tenth of the time on a particular
show, and get a mix that was about 85% of the quality. Shortcuts were taken, things may not be perfectly balanced, but they
make a good solid mix. So within 4-5 months, I banged out something like 12 shows. It's a struggle fighting my inner perfectionist,
but there's a middle ground somewhere. This recording is one of those scratch mixes. As far as a mix quality grade goes, I'd give
it a solid B. I'd consider it an upgrade over the previous Bono IEM + AUD release, but to each their own.

I could point out the various glitches or oddball things in the mix that I hear everytime I listen, but what's the fun in that? I will say
that I used the audio from the previous Bono/AUD mix for Hands that Built America since there was a glitch in the BigBen recording
for that section.

IEM recordings are not for everyone. If not they're not your thing, either sonically or ethically, there's excellent alternative recording out there.

Similarly, I'm mixing primarily for my ears. This is what sounds best to me. This may not sound best to you. That's a fair statement. I'm open to honest criticism (although you should have caught me when I was working on the mix!), but pointless complaining is unappreciated (naturally). Let's play nice.

Please don't convert to mp3, then back to wave, and then trade it around. This stuff is too easy to find on torrents now.

Please do not attempt to remaster/remix this recording and spread it around. This has been heavily processed, and if you want to do your own mix, go get the wireless recordings (good luck) and do it yourself from scratch.

Also, please don't torrent on other sites without at least dropping me a line and asking. I may want to just torrent it there myself. Please ask (and wait for permission!) before putting it into any matrix + video. If you ask nicely, I will likely say “yes”.

Recording Notes:
I didn't tape it, so can't give too much details. Sounds very clearly to be a Bono stereo IEM mixed with an audience. I heard the original clips, and it wasn't as horrible as I expected it to be, but still sounded subpar to me. Lots of nearby clappers and sibilance (harsh -ess sound on vocals). Bono likes his high-end in the cans. Whoever did the original mix also cranked the limiter too much; not much that can be recovered off that. Dynamics are a good thing, people! Sounds like it was aligned and basic levels set--the quieter songs sound like a different IEM to Aud ratio compared to the louder songs.

Now, this still not a great recording in my opinion. But with a little spit and polish, I do think it's a bit better. I'd give the original a C- grade, while I'd give it a B- now. Some say I'm a tough grader.

Work done...zapping loud claps, de-esser (but sometimes excessive sibilance left some distortion), low end boost, mono out the low-end.

'Remastering' this show also breaks some of my usual protocols, particularly working on a show that has already been mastered. Naturally, it'd be better to go to the original sources sitting in the closet and do my own mix. But since this one is already out there, maybe put a little polish out there to smooth out some of the harshness without a ton of work. Then I'll go back to my other projects.

Anyways, hope its an improvement for folks. If not, delete it.

Comments:

Note: This is a 24/44.1 file set, which in most cases can't be burned directly to CD without downsampling to 16-bit. A 16-bit, CD-friendly version will be posted separately. The recording is seamless; the disc breaks above are merely a suggestion.

The last of five nights in Chicago; featuring a few setlist variations and a very vocal audience. The performance on the whole was pretty good, with two songs that had not been played any of the previous nights ("California" and "40") and Bono appeared to be particularly animated. I think (though I would need to check) this is also the longest show of the five-night run; the band seemed to really enjoy their stint in Chicago and played a slightly longer set than usual.

Recording quality is much better than I expected it would be; I was on the rail near the E-stage, though talkers near me forced me to move twice (I ended up about midway in the arena) in order to minimize their impact on the recording. The sound appears to me to be fairly consistent throughout the recording, which surpsied me -- I thought there would be phasing as I moved around to get away from the people who were loudly chatting. Overall, the vocals are more distant than I would like (the function of the overhead speakers pointing more to the assigned seats than the GA section) but the sound is pretty good. I only spot-checked the recording, but "Ordinary Love" is the only track that's a bit marred by the audience chatter. I think that on the whole this will be an enjoyable recording for U2 fans, though I'm sure that better sources (probably with pro rigs from the 100-level or club section) will become available over time.

A note to tapers: If you can find a good club or front-balcony seat beside the stage, that is probably the best location for taping this show. The GA section has speakers that are almost directly overhead; on one hand, it's good because there are speakers all the way to the back of the arena as opposed to over the stage, but on the other, the sound is coming directly down on you as opposed to in front of you. It's a bit tricky to record. Stealth tapers with cards on the floor will need to orient their microphones almost directly upward to get a good line on the sound ... and even then, it's tough. Omnis might be the best bet from the floor. I had my best luck with my cards on the club level.

Performance

On fire. My first time seeing them live. My dad heard "Gloria" on MTV for the first time when he was 20, while I got to hear "Gloria" live [for only the SECOND time played in 9 years] at age 20. Oddly cool how that works out.

Audience

CHI crowd was rowdy and ready to show their love to these Daring Dubliners before sending them on their way with well wishes to continue their 2015 tour in Toronto.

I love Chicago concerts. The vibes were a good send-off to a five-night stand in the Windy City.

Overall

Terrific show, and a wonderful night in the United Center with the Dublin boys. So many moments where it felt like Bono and co were speaking to me. Their shows are so powerful and spiritually awakening (Bono's political talk is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be). They have a massive platform that allows them to talk to the world and make a life-changing impact, even if it's not in the US or other developing countries, so they're going to use it however they'd like to
