Notes: This was the last rehearsal before the start of the tour, and was recorded the evening of June 29. I arrived at the stadium earlier that morning in order to get a place in the GA line for the first show. I was roughly the 115th person in line. There was a rumor that U2 had invited 500 guests to be in the audience for the last rehearsal. I was hoping that some of us waiting in line would be amongst the lucky few. Unfortunately, the band did not allow any fans from the GA line into the stadium as they had before the start of the Vertigo tour.
Earlier that afternoon, before the soundcheck, I walked around the stadium with my receiver looking for locations where the signal was the strongest. I settled on a spot on Avinguda de Joan XXIII, on a slope across the street from Camp Nou. This location was good since it was very close to the stadium, and there were three exit portals that allowed for the escape of the transmissions from inside the stadium. However, this particular location was a disgusting place to record. The ground was littered with used condoms, hypodermic needles, and feces.
In the evening, I returned to the same location where I had recorded the soundcheck. Joining me were two fellow IEM tapers from France. For some reason, they were unable to receive any signals with their Icom IC-R5 receivers. The rehearsal began around 10:00 pm. I had to carefully orient the receiver antenna in order to get a clear signal and make sure that it did not move from this position. The signal was nice and strong until about halfway through the rehearsal. For several minutes there was a great deal of interference ("Unknown Caller" through "I'll Go Crazy..."). There were a lot of people on the slope around me listing to the rehearsal. The interference might have been caused by cell phones. After a few minutes the signal returned and was more or less fine for the rest of the show.
If you listen very carefully during the start of Ultraviolet, you can hear the Edge use some expletive language.
