"I think every time I go back to past events, you know the facts reinforce the fact that we always turn out to be a better band than I think we are. And I guess you know that's sort of a good surprise to have as a band. We work together and try and push out the envelope, because we have a sort of band dysmorphia as regards to the quality of what we're doing. We're always trying to break through that."

While the band and crew were working on the Joshua Tree album's mixing, Lillywhite's wife, singer Kirsty MacColl, volunteered to set the running order for the album. The band told her to put "Where the Streets Have No Name" first and "Mothers of the Disappeared" last, with the rest sequenced according to her preference.
