20 My Sweet Lord/With or Without You/Moment of Surrender
1. New York (=Bullet the Blue Sky)
Rather than the more typical, atmospheric Beautiful Day, this final show of the tour pulls no punches and starts with the heavy New York.
2. Discothèque (=Desire)
Another big, rocking number, from the newest album. A bit shallow, maybe, but that's all part of the game. This performance is legendary among fans for the extended outro from Edge.
3. Mofo (=All Along the Watchtower)
The show thunders on with perhaps the hardest-rocking banger in the setlist.
4. Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around the World (=Slow Dancing)
5. Staring At the Sun (=All I Want Is You)
After all that heavy energy, it's nice to breathe with two more relaxed numbers: the first is a special treat, as it's an as-yet-unreleased rarity that won't appear officially until it's dusted off for Achtung Baby in 1993! The second is the popular ballad from Pop.
6. Beautiful Day (=Where the Streets Have No Name)
The song from the preceding album that has quickly shown itself to be U2's defining set piece brings the arena to another level.
7. Red Flag Day (=I Will Follow)
8. Stuck In a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of (=I Still Haven't Found)
A pair of classics, from the beginning of their career and from the superstar album, have the audience singing along like nothing else and continuing the soaring enthusiasm from Beautiful Day.
9. Daydream Believer (=People Get Ready)
A frequent, gentle cover song. It's a nice moment.
10. City Of Blinding Lights (=Bad)
Another of U2's big, emotional, cathartic live numbers continues the onslaught of magic.
11. The Playboy Mansion (=Van Diemen's Land)
This odd little song from Pop is apparently a favourite of Edge's. It's a pleasant breath of kitschiness, coming between two warhorse hard-hitters...
12. Magnificent (=New Year's Day)
13. Vertigo (=Pride)
U2's first major hits are THE way to close the main set. The sweeping, rumbling Magnificent gives way to the band's essential banger Vertigo. Way to leave the fans wanting more!
14. Last Night On Earth (=Angel of Harlem)
15. Do You Feel Loved (=When Love Comes To Town)
16. Please (=Love Rescue Me)
This trilogy from Pop serve their standard roles as the meat of the encore on the PopMart Tour - transitioning through addressing loss, attraction, and peace, each song lands perfectly and flows on naturally from the others.
17. The Crystal Ballroom (=11 O'Clock Tick Tock)
18. Lights Of Home (=Out of Control)
But it's the last night of a successful tour, and the show can't end there! Surprises are in store when U2 pull out these former classics that have recently been largely laid to rest. Fans from the early days will remember how The Crystal Ballroom brought the house down so well they usually played it twice, and it has the same effect in an arena as in a tiny club. The mortal and passionate Lights Of Home can never go amiss.
19. Moment Of Surrender (="40")
Finally, the show and tour close as they surely must, with Moment of Surrender. The passion fills up the room and the crowd, and they all leave, chanting that iconic "oh oh oh ohhhhhh oh" refrain all the way home.
Disclaimer: Spoiler (click to toggle)Yeah, I replaced All Along the Watchtower with Mofo, instead of with one of the PopMart covers. Pop is long and R&H is short in terms of studio material, so I figured it was a fair trade. Same for Zooropa and AB so Slow Dancing become TTYAATW.
Also... goddamn, I'd love to see this show. That encore at the very least!!!
