We may agree or not about the album not containing any new sounds and creativity, and we may agree or not about how important is the creativity when valuing an album or a band, but you have to keep in mind that they're almost 60 years old.

And I don't mean that as an excuse like "well, at least they're doing something".
I mean it like when John Lennon was asked "I used to love your music, what happened?" and he answered "I grew up" (or something to that effect).

I think their music still has creativity (unless we find out that Tedder wrote the whole album), but if what I value from a band is how groundbreaking and creative they are, I would have a hard time trying to find that in a band of 50+ year olds.

Agreed. There’s literally no other example of a band that’s been together as long and at their age who has put out work as good as their respective “peak” work.

It’s also impossible to compare and always will be, unless an alien visits Earth who has never heard music before and we ask them to compare lol. There’s far too much attached to JT and AB that puts them at basically a “mythical” status that no new album could ever match up with, no matter how much we might want them to.

I'm in love with this record! It's definitely in my Top 4 U2 albums (TJT, AB, HTDAAB being the other three). Can't possibly explain how much I love Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way.

    1. Love Is All We Have Left - 9/10
So,Bono Iver discovers the Vocoder... and it works quite well. Lyrically cringeworthy but a great ambience track. Could be even longer.

    2. Lights Of Home - 5/10

Sounds like Cedarwood Road with Haim to me. Didn't like that one but I like the Free yourself thingy at the end. Lyrics rather flat again.

    3. You're The Best Thing About Me - 3/10

Beautiful Day, Miracle Drug and With or without you thrown together. Combined with lyrics from a 14 year old boy. Not my cup of tea. but I understand why people might like it.

    4. Get Out Of You Own Way - 3/10

    See 3.

    5. American Soul - 0/10

When you think, it can't get worse than Glastonbury and Volcano, there still is American Soul. Lyrics must come from some chimps who played around with a random generator.

    6. Summer of Love - 8/10

Combining a happy melody with dark lyrics might not be the most original idea in the world. Copying the music from Prayer in C and combining it with a story about Syria even less. Nevertheless it works for me. Quite touching.

    7. Red Flag Day - 7/10

Echoes the 80ies. Good thing in this case.

    8. The Showman (Little More Better) - 3/10

Must be a parody. Didn't find out on what yet, though. Out of nowhere it can become a 10 in my book soon.

    9. The Little Things That Give You Away -6/10

U2 on what they do best. Dramatic hymns charged with pathos. The first half ist great. Then Mercy comes in and ruins the rest.
Could become a perfect song if The National do a cover.

    10. Landlady - 0/10

Wow. Bono loves Ali? Who would have guessed. Credits for trying to use a uptempo beat to wake up the listener. Nearly worked.

    11. The Blackout - 0/10

The best part ist the Even better than the real thing intro. Then it becomes Magnificent part III. But even worse. This is silly, Billy.

    12. Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way - 0/10

Ouch. Ooooohh oooh oooh shit. Hope no animal got hurt in the recording sessions. Chimps for the lyrics again?

    13. 13 (There Is A Light) - 8/10

The better Song for Someone. Like the atmosphere.
Careful, they might get the pitchforks out and hunt you down! No negative opinions allowed here anymore.

Wholeheartedly agree with your review. Most of it is rubbish

Lol. Good to have contrary opinions around, so no harm done.

I actually agree with the low ratings for GOOYOW, American Soul, and even Love is Bigger, which I know is a favorite of many here. Also agree with Love is All We Have Left, Summer of Love, and There Is a Light being among the standouts.

    But 0/10 for Landlady??!!

Haha. Happy to further debate as long as we all keep it light and respectful around here!
  6. 1. Love Is All We Have Left 6,5/10
I miss 2/3 minutes extra of the song.

    2. Light Of Home 8-8,5/10
Good song, the mix is even better

    3. You're The Best Thing About Me 7,5/10
A U2 pop song no wand then is ok

    4. Get Out Of You Own Way 7/10
Another pop song, we heard this before

    5. American Soul 7,5/10
A good break off after the pop songs. But U2 can make better angry songs than this.

    6. Summer of Love 6,5/10
    A bit of boring song

    7. Red Flag Day 8-8,5/10
I like this one, good bass tune of Adam.

    8. The Showman (Little More Better) 7/10
A little more better than Summer of Love. 7/10
    Nice singalong

    9. The Little Things That Give You Away 9/10
One of the best U2 songs ever. Edge can still do it, please more of this. I prefer the live version, the 4 man playing together. This version is a bit overproduced.

    10. Landlady 8/10
Good song after Little things. But why is this song abruptly terminated?

    11. The Blackout 7,5/10
Same song lile American Soul. Good position after Landlady

    12. Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way 8-8,5/10
Besides the sentimental intro, which needs a more sharpe Edge, a great song

    13. 13 (There Is A Light) 6/10
Boring and a unnecessary song. Already on SOI.

    14. Book Of Your Heart 9/10
Awsome closer. This song is also too short, 3,55 min! With Little things the stand outs of SOE.

The overall listening experience of SOE is better than the individual songs on SOE.
In general I think SOE is a good album not in my U2 top 5. Bonos sings very good.

But for me personal I miss Edges guitar, too many pop songs and no stripped down songs, just the four of them, guitars, bass and drums, some unfinished songs and songs we have heard before.

Very curious of the live performances, could change above. Edge will be very busy on stage with singing, keyboards and not forget, playing guitars.........
  7. 1. Love Is All We Have Left 7/10
Cool song, nothing more, nothing less.

    2. Light Of Home 7,5/10
    Very nice, very nice.

    3. You're The Best Thing About Me 3/10
It has grown on me but still, why do they still make these kind of songs. It's so mehhh.

    4. Get Out Of You Own Way 6,5/10
U2 doing U2, okay song. Don't listen to it too much, it gets boring.

    5. American Soul 6,5/10
Angry U2 is normally amazing, but this is not that. It's alright.

    6. Summer of Love 6,5/10
Okay, okay, good lyrics but overall it's also a bit boring.

    7. Red Flag Day 7,5/10
    U22017 doing U21983, nicely done.

    8. The Showman (Little More Better) 6,5/10
It's not Wild Honey, but it's not much beter.

    9. The Little Things That Give You Away 10/10
    Love love love love

    10. Landlady 8/10
Beautiful song, really love this one.

    11. The Blackout 7,5/10
I prefer this over American Soul, good song.

    12. Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way 8,5/10
Typical U2 song, has the danger of becoming bland when listening to it more but overall a really great song.

    13. 13 (There Is A Light) 8/10
Fuck Song For Someone, this is so much better.

    14. Book Of Your Heart 8/10
Why is this not on the album?

Edge's guitar in the background.no particular emotion
Too much acoustic guitar ( good.but i miss The Edge )
    Larry Too.a good album.but flat.
I Like it.it's growing day by day.
