1. still gives me goosebumps to this day

you have to remember that U2 were the biggest band on the planet at the time

and to speak out against terrorists (who were based in their homeland) who had (and would go on to) kill innocent men, women and children without a care is a true stand out moment in rock history

imagine taylor swift or coldplay doing that today?

bono did take a risk whether the reports of the scummy IRA issuing a death threat were true or not, because america has its fair share of crazies with free legal access to guns so it still was an amazingly brave thing to do

maybe he was younger and didn't think about dying, maybe he was thinking about making a statement for the movie, maybe he just had a MASSIVE set of balls and didn't give a shit

FUCK THE REVOLUTION he screams - brilliant
  2. I remember the first time I watched that. I was probably about 14, hated violence, loved U2, detested the republican means of airing their beliefs and was devastated when he said 'the glory of the revolution, and the glory of dying for the revolution' then I was emotional and delighted beyond words when he followed it with 'FUCK THE REVOLUTION' !!!
A young man showing unbridled, unscripted, true passion. One of the best ever moments captured on tape.

The scummy IRA indeed. Terrorists. Think they have a 'cause'. Nope, just murderers.

  4. Not sure why you were so devastated when he prefaced those quotations by saying "And let me tell you something; I've had enough of Irish-Americans who haven't been back to their country in 20 or 30 years, come up to and talk about the resistance, the revolution back home and..." He was absolutely pissed off with that attitude and was never endorsing it.

One of the bravest and most spine-tingling rages he's ever done. There was talk about him becoming an IRA target because of it. Still fills me with admiration any time I hear it.

Totally. I was 14 though and didn't fully understand the situation. I had only a basic knowledge and also there were ridiculous rumours I'd heard in the UK that U2 supported the ira. The preface you talk about, at the time I feared he was going along the lines of he was there, the Irish-Americans weren't so he knew what he was talking about and then when he said 'glory' I initially took it very literally.
Hearing that speech for the first time made me want to learn more about the situation in Ireland.
  6. It's a very strong, very emotional performance, and definitely one of the best moments they've ever captured on tape. Also, the 86 & 87 reinvention of SBS are probably the best incarnations of the song they've ever played, with the slow, guitar-only intro and the song exploding later on... So glad we have the R&H version to enjoy forever.
  7. It is probably worth re-visiting the details of the actual event according to Wikipedia.
