you have to remember that U2 were the biggest band on the planet at the time
and to speak out against terrorists (who were based in their homeland) who had (and would go on to) kill innocent men, women and children without a care is a true stand out moment in rock history
imagine taylor swift or coldplay doing that today?
bono did take a risk whether the reports of the scummy IRA issuing a death threat were true or not, because america has its fair share of crazies with free legal access to guns so it still was an amazingly brave thing to do
maybe he was younger and didn't think about dying, maybe he was thinking about making a statement for the movie, maybe he just had a MASSIVE set of balls and didn't give a shit

Not sure why you were so devastated when he prefaced those quotations by saying "And let me tell you something; I've had enough of Irish-Americans who haven't been back to their country in 20 or 30 years, come up to and talk about the resistance, the revolution back home and..." He was absolutely pissed off with that attitude and was never endorsing it.
One of the bravest and most spine-tingling rages he's ever done. There was talk about him becoming an IRA target because of it. Still fills me with admiration any time I hear it.
