  1. So I've heard rumor that U2 cancelled a 2nd Popmart show in Philadelphia after very few tickets were sold. The initial show on June 8 was sold out. But I can't find any info about this cancelled second show. Was it supposed to be on June 7 or June 9? Maybe the Tibetan Freedom gig on June 7 was a convenient excuse to cancel a show that was selling poorly?

    Popmart was the first tour I ever experienced and followed, so I would be interested to know what the date was with for cancelled show. Did anybody have tickets for it? The cancelled Raleigh show is often talked about, but not this one. Thanks for any info that can be provided.

    Another thing seldomly mentioned is the Nov 19, 1997 show in Indianapolis that was announced with all the other tour dates, but never went on sale.

    Never heard that before but it's definitely a possibility the US leg of thr tour was very much plagued by poor ticket sales in certain cities however they were probably still selling more tickets in the US then anyone else that year ,but apart from that they weren't up to speed on playing the songs which was a big problem and that got widely published in the press ,I heard one of the reasons they cancelled the Raleigh concert was so they could rehearse for the 3 upcoming gigs in Giants stadium 🏟 where the world's media were waiting with their sharpened knives the whole experience left a mark on them as they didn't do a stadium tour in the US for another 12 years which as we know was a massive success.
  5. Would I be right in saying other than Mexico City and maybe another concert none of the entire third leg sold out?
    They seemed to re-create the monster that was Zoo TV during the summer in Europe but bookended with some really questionable feedback in the States.

    Also about Popmart, they were going to put on an extra Philadelphia show, which the done in the end. But it got cancelled because only 4,500 tickets were sold. East Rutherford had 3 shows, which was pointless too, because I remember reading from someone that went to the third show, and apparently the stadium seating was half empty, literally.

    But because Popmart wasn't a success? I don't know, but probably because of the low ticket sales in North America.

    yeah i remember pictures like that at the time depressing the shit out of me! i'll always wonder whether if they hadn't oversold america and played a fewer amount of dates in larger cities whether the tour would be viewed the way it is by them and looked back on more fondly ad not as a 'failure' by some people?

  8. ap5, l literally just finished it yesterday. It is worth a read. 3rd legs are always going to be suspect. I would have imagined all of those 3rd dates would have been penciled in to begin with.

    Thanks for the recommendation! Read the book over the past couple day - lots of interesting little anecdotes about the album and tour. Fun read.

    Such an underrated album and tour - my U2 holy grail remains a release of early versions and mixes of the Pop album.
