1. They’re either stalling because Larry isn’t healing as quickly as they initially thought, or they’re paralyzed with indecision and have no idea what they want to do.

A dark day for us, people.

I don't think they necessarily said no to a rock and roll album. But I can see it being taken that way as well.

Adam: "If all the world is a loop, I think we've kind of got to the point where we've pushed things as far as we can in terms of adding extra things into the band. Now we kind of want to go back, and kind of take the layers off, and get down to what the band does really well. Which is to play live in a room. There's a freshness to that now, and i don't know if there's many bands that can still make records that way. That's what we want to explore."

So looking at getting back to the four of them in a room playing music. Maybe that's rock and roll?

Edge: "Music made in real time in a room with musicians interacting with one other - it just has a narrative, a sonic narrative, which you just cannot create using a different approach -- using layering, drum loops or whatever -- I love that as well. Don't get me wrong I'm not a purist in any sense. I feel that the culture shifts and morphs based on what feels fresh, what's been overplayed, what's been underplayed. I do feel music that's been made in real-time has been underserved. It's starting to feel really fresh again." and he finished with "We're in a good place to make an album like that, because that's what we started out doing."

They were talking about being inspired by listening to these "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" tracks as well, as well as looking further back. Sounds like they want to play in a room together again and see where that gets them.

Thanks for posting the quotes! My summary didn't do it justice. I agree, recording in real-time, with a stripped back approach, could easily be rock-and-roll!

I'm impatient, too, missing them, and haven't seen the live since 2017, but I'm going to reserve judgement until they post the full video upload, because there is a chance it will add context about when the interview was recorded.

I'm also intrigued to read what Adam has got to say about the future of U2 in the magazine next week.

Edge: "Getting better every week. We'll be making a record with him in no time. We're very excited about that."
  4. Zane Lowe: Someone who has actually had a genuine opportunity to see his friends and band players, Larry (Mullen Jr.) And I wonder how that experience, you can't speak for him, but whatever you can share, how that experience was for him with a fullness of heart to watch you go and do this with Bram who was brilliant, but how that experience was for him.

The Edge: I'd say he probably loved it on many levels and also probably was like, "I can't wait to get back there. Oops, sorry."

Zane Lowe: That's what we want. We want him to not wait to get back to his drum stool.

The Edge: Yeah, no. So the great news is Larry is getting better every week and we'll be making a racket with him in no time. So we're very excited about that. We, as a band, found our creative chops by playing live in front of an audience and by necessity had to keep things quite simple. And I think that's hopefully the hallmark of the next collection of songs.

Thank you very much Aaron for your appointment, I think there is no U2 production as exciting as the confinement of 4 subjects in a room simply making music I'm hopeful to remember that Achtung Baby was born from this formula
  6. I was wondering why Edge said, "Sorry," after saying that Larry probably felt like, "I can't wait to get back up there," but it's because he said he can't effing wait to get back up there.
  7. Adam also said, "We kinda wanna go back and take the layers off, and get down to what the band does really well - which is to play live in a room. That's what we wanna explore. Now it won't be all that we do... you know, we've acquired a few other skills along the way, but it's certainly something we wanna do on the next record."
  8. Edge said in the press release announcing the album, "We were onto something. What you're getting on this shadow album is that raw energy of discovery, the visceral impact of the music, a sonic narrative, a moment in time, the exploration and interaction of four musicians playing together in a room. This is the pure U2 drop."

So other than recycling some of the catch phrases, it sounds like they are suggesting what's here on the Re-Assemble album is what they might want to recapture in studio for the next album in today's interview.
  9. Did Edge have his Casio keyboard with him, ?
  10. I just really hope we get a tour soon. It’s my birthday tomorrow so I would not mind some good news about a tour and record!
  11. Stripped down doesnt have to mean unreasonable guitar music / rock labum got scrapped.
