U2 - Numb
Album:
Zooropa (1993)
  1. Okay, I know I'm slow to catch up! Just listened to Mike Hedges remix of numb - did not get it at all, should have left that one well alone!
  2. I still dont get Numb, whats the ideas and the point behind this song? anyone know/can help me please... ?

  3. I'm sure someone can explain it much more completely and in depth then i can but from what i know:

the song is basically the whole idea of zootv in a nutshell. Its a series of commands and contradictions that are thrown at us by society and especially the media everyday. The sheer number of them in the song and quick pace at which they are rattled off signifies the amount of sensory overload that we experience every day.

The Edge wrote pretty much the whole song including the lyrics which is why he sings it im guessing.

Personally i love it but i can see how it'd be weird for some people

  4. I love the Zooropa version but I just don't get the point of this remix. Personally for me, Edge's falsetto on the original was a integral part of the track and it's now been dropped. Love the video though!!!
  5. It refers to sensory overload - what ZooTV was referring to. ''People come to a rock show and watch television''.

It might also have to do with Edge divorcing his wife in the early 90s - feeling a sense of being numb.
  6. Thanks guys, Im more insightful now

    did you know?
The song 'Numb' is about how The Edge felt when he split up with his wife. The felt like he couldn't do anything, he was useless. He felt numb.

just found that at the bottom of the page
  7. I love this song. So different and yet so meaningful and dark in a way...
  8. Which other band would give their guitarplayer 3-4 minutes to paint such a picture ?!

Very different track - especially therefor to be kept alive!
  9. Numb is a brilliant song, and I used to have it as a personal anthem when I attended a very fundamentalist religious school. Every day was filled with "Don't" instructions.
  10. Listened to Zooropa in full a few day’s ago and now watching zoo tv sydney and I’ve really not given this song enough credit in a while. I feel like I used to like it more up until the last few years but it’s grew heavily on me this week.

I love it as well, and the story about how it came together is also a fun read. It's basically an Eno Remix of Down all the days with Edge mumbling by himself in a little studio somewhere in Dublin..

I tried combining them myself but wasn't really happy about the result
