You said it: they play it infuriatingly safe.
They don't use the screen until Streets. They could rotate Bad with AIWIY, OOC, IWF, who knows.
They also don't use the screen for Little Things (except for Bono and Edge's kids at the end). They can choose to end the show with other closers like 40, etc.
They didn't have any visuals for MW, but they played it anyway, because it's easy, a crowd pleaser and they were missing the now cliche fan onstage.
So if they really want to change the setlist, they can, but prefer not to do it.
The target of this tour is the casual fan.
  2. I think the casual fan has been the target of all U2 tours, at least since the '00s, and we still had way more setlist variation than this.
  3. They could have dusted off 11 O'clock tick tick easily enough. I'll be gutted to note near Out of Control again. Would also take I Will Follow in place of anything in the encore bar Little Things or Ultraviolet.

On 360, for example, the variation was mainly because they dropped their new songs. The casual fan didn't respond to it. And the reissue of Achtung Baby.

11 o'clock tick tock is a strange one, it seems like they don't believe in the strength of that song in front of a larger crowd. I'm sure there was a stat saying it's only been played once in a stadium. They seem to only like playing it at these sort of club venues now, I know they did it a few times in arenas as well during the elevation tour. Again though this suggests it's not about the work load but something else that prevents them playing it, I will Follow as well is ready to go so it's hard to reason why they don't want to play it other than it not fitting the idea they have in there head for the show.
  6. Joshua tree tour without the unforgettable fire is unforgivable.
  7. This tour is not about the original Joshua Tree tour. Don't be upset about my opinion, but I think they added The Joshua Tree to sell out the stadiums and to do promotion for the new album.
  8. It was great to see them live again, but I feel a bit short changed as it was an important album/period for them and me. I did expect some, if not all of the b-sides to be performed. Otherwise, it's just like any other U2 concert - with a few of the lesser known Joshua Tree songs, thrown in.
Would anyone agree the omission of less known songs was a commercial one - possibly instigated by the new management?

It didn't sell out in London. Friends of mine purchased tickets for Sunday a couple of days before.

If it's just like any other u2 concert with a few of the lesser known Joshua Tree songs being played isn't that exactly what you want to see? Like the next tour I want to see it exactly like any other u2 concert but with the SOE songs thrown in, and there's no way they will play them all like they're doing with TJT. I don't believe any setlists are dictated by management I think it's all down to the band and I think I'm right in saying advice by Willie Williams but ultimately band have final say.
