Maybe, that’s still not better or worse than a video from something that’s already been released anyway. I have to admit from all the time I’ve been a fan of the band this is the most I’ve been disappointed yet. This is my favourite album but it’s also most u2 fans favourite album. I think zoo tv is probably most u2 fans favourite tour as well and they’ve just completely let the whole thing down. Remixes take up almost half of the digital release, how many u2 fans are in it for the remixes? I’m still on board for the next album but I think a lot of fans have been let down with AB30.

Realize that some people chase after remixes like some people chase after live stuff. This is a big crazy community. We all have our favorites and niches. And yes, I'm in the camp that would prefer a disc of new remixes to some 30 year old live show I probably have had on the harddrive for 20 years and don't listen to now.
* Fans were let down with Duals. Others loved it because it was new to them.
* Fans were let down with Ahimsa. I've heard from some people who think it's wonderful.
* Fans hated Melon back in the day. I loved it personally. And these days it's highly sought after.
* People were let down with the North Side Story book, others have asked for more gifts along those lines. Every time one gets announced I see a lot of wish lists from fans. It's not all live music.
* Fans hated the ATYCLB box set. But enough people bought it that it was the first collection they've released to chart since 2009 I believe. Yes, it sold better than the Joshua Tree box set in 2017.
* And a lot of fans hated Achtung Baby and saw the change of direction as a betrayal...good year to celebrate that.
A lot of people around these parts love the live stuff, because the community here has been drawn here by live shows being shared, discussions of concerts, the wonderful live photo archive and so on. Over at U2Songs the group hanging about tends to be the fans of the obscure studio remixes and demos and odds and ends, because that is what we've focused on over the years. There's a lot of people out there, and U2 releases things for a wide range of people.
Pretty sure this one wasn't aimed in my direction in general. But I'm still happy to get the merch and the colour vinyl. That works for me. That's enough for me. I don't need every anniversary to have some big fancy box set. I was happy with my 40th anniversary copy of Boy on vinyl. Surprised that October got nothing for it's 40th, and that Zooropa and Pop have never been celebrated at all.
The digital box set? The fact that it's just a digital release of what they put out in 2011 is just like anything else they've put on streaming sites over the years to me. They are updating what is available on streaming, and on digital sites. They've been doing it for a year now. I haven't bothered to pay for any of that either. I have my discs to play from 10 years ago. Except mine comes with the 'baby' mixes.

All that is fine and I realise that amongst all the U2 fans out there we all look for something different but you cannot convince me that the number of remixes is relative to the amount of fans who want remixes as a first priority. Previously unreleased studio stuff I can understand more but I still believe the vast majority of people that buy the rereleases want live material. ATYCLB in some proves that. It wasn’t unreleased live material but I reckon Boston on cd and vinyl for the first time would have helped a lot. The triple vinyl in particular is an excellent well packaged item. I don’t think as a fan of live material I’m selfish or want too much. I’ve already said my ideal AB anniversary would have been a zoo tv boxset with several shows but all I wanted was one previously unreleased show. They could have added that to what they’ve already done and all I would have been talking about is how great it is to have a new zoo tv show officially released but they didn’t do that they just took the lazy route and released stuff that had already been released. I think the 20th anniversary 2 cd edition would have featured 95% of what most of the fans would want compared to the new digital boxset and the other couple of tracks would have been easy to find. The remixes I truly believe an extreme minority of fans are interested in. U2 are known as a great live band yet they haven’t released a show that properly promotes there most popular album amongst fans. Sydney was a Zooropa show and featured half of that album and a little less AB, still amazing but not a true AB show like earlier in the tour. U2 aren’t known as a dance band yet have probably released more remixes than original songs. There’s something wrong there.

U2 is under contract to Universal. Part of that contract is Universal being able to release and re-release the music in new formats as new formats develop. The Achtung Baby stuff from 2011 was always going to end up on streaming services eventually. The label wants more material to drive more people onto streaming services. Would you have been this upset if they had just put it up there six weeks ago and said nothing about it? I doubt it.
Someone saw an anniversary and said "hey, this would be a good time to do this" and probably approached the band to see if they were up for it. Do it while you are doing the vinyl and you might get some more eyes on it. If they've been working on this digital box set for months, why did they miss the anniversary by a few weeks?
The colour vinyl are usually being pushed by the label. Do you realize that most of the U2 coloured discs prior to this have been part of a bigger set of discs sent out by Universal? Usually they do 16 titles at once and promote them all together to retailers etc. Yes the band gets involved and says yay or nay, but a lot of this is driven by the label.
Likewise this video upgrade. It's being driven by Universal and YouTube, and a number of Universal artists are going through the exact same upgrades at the same time. U2 said yes to getting involved, and they have someone hired who looks after it on their behalf. I'm not sure how much day to day knowledge they even have about it.
It's telling that the "Digital Box" is an exact replica of the 2011 stuff. The "discs" are broken up the exact same. They are still referring to it as "Uber" and "Unter" discs. The four discs of material they are releasing are just the 2011 material being made available on digital services finally instead of the two disc version that was available previously. They probably pruned the Baby mixes to keep it under $40.
Last thing...
"U2 aren't known as a dance band."
They've hit the top of the dance / club charts more than a lot of dance / club acts ever have, they know how to have success in those areas. Those remixes of 'Love is Bigger' that they did? They hit #1 on the strength of airplay in clubs with that song. They organized club nights all over the US promoting the song, and they were well attended events. They hit the top 10 in the UK as well on the club play charts. Top DJs line up to work with them. Yes, they may not be much of a dance band on their own but their remixes are fire in the clubs, they work with top talent, and yes, they get a lot of interest in the club scene when they put something out.
