I like it, o.k. 1987, the original is a better version. But Bono still sings great into the version. The horns/strings are modern. Larry's drums are less to me. The chorus is 1987.
Hopefully U2 plays the '87 version at the Ziggo dome.

I don't mind the more forward guitar but there are too many layers and the horns and synths thing just are not for me. Maybe its just a bad recording but mastering wise sounds terrible to me.
And that spoken verse "to stoop to low to reach so high" and the little oh at the end..... why.... For a studio version I just don't get it not B mans finest thats for sure.

I'll reserve judgement on the mastering until the official release, tracks go through more compressors for radio play, often eliminating what little dynamic range was probably there in the first place. There are a lot more layers evident now though, so I hope they get it right on the release.
I like the new mix a lot though, not replacing the original nor intending to, just a different perspective on a great song. I like the horns, for me they give the lyrical theme a greater context. Extra backing vocals and guitar I've not noticed before (was it always in there? I've not been back to compare yet). I like the warm tone to his voice. Also the fact he hasn't tried to do a carbon copy of his vocal from the original. A record is like a photograph, that was what he sounded like then, this is what he sounds like now (whether we like it or not!) Interesting they've used the old chorus for the majority though, when he can clearly still hit those top notes as heard towards the outro. As for the debate as to why they've bothered, what's the point etc, equally, why not?
I have every faith the B man will smash this on tour. For all the stick his voice gets lately, he can still pull it out the bag when he needs to and it's kindled my excitement for the tour.
Cheers
