This double cd contains performances from both gigs that U2 played in Vancouver during the Vertigo tour on the first leg.The source of the recording is clearly ALD. Both show were videotaped those nights as rehearsals for the upcoming Chicago nights used then for the official dvd.
The original recording itself was a decent ald with a very strong hum around 60hz.I've removed almost all the hum (it was very very strong!) the hiss, improved the stereo image and channel separation. I've use some smooth dynamic compression, equalization and added a litte bit of reverb to create some ambience. As final process I've maximed it with L3.
The sound is still a little bit raw and maybe crunchy but these are the limitations of the source. In some portions of some tracks you can hear some echo. This happened because the person responsible for the ALD equipment left the audience microphones open during the start or the end of certain songs causing a delay/echo in the sound. The song New year's Day it's a clear example. I've also removed all the little gaps and audio holes between the tracks to have a perfect and a smooth transition between them.
This remastering has been done to pay some justice to a nice soundboard recording.
The strange thing is the fact that both cds finish with '40'.
Maybe an entire ALD recording of both nights exists somewhere but who knows.....

Original Taper Comments: I was fortunate enough to have recorded the funny intervention by U2’s Stage Manager (Rocko Reedy) informing the audience that the show was delayed because of technical difficulties.

Remaster Comments: Why would someone remaster a show a second time? Well, I was AT this show, so it holds special meaning, and after switching audio gear, I realized the first remaster left a lot to be desired. That plus I've discovered a whole new tool and process I'd like to share...

I introduce you to the power of "Har Bal". A remasterer's dream. Using Har Bal, you can take any song and "harmonic balance" it to match a reference song of your choosing. The results are staggering, as this remix can attest to.

For this final version (no version III I promise), I settled on using as a reference, a track from the Chicago DVD to get the "live feel", augmented with some cleaner high-end from HTDAAB. Effectively what Har Bal does, is attempt to match the sound print of the boot recording to that of the reference. It also removes all of the harmonic imbalances, creating a sound that is enjoyable to listen to at high volumes, low volumes, in the car, on your ipod.

I'll include a sample so you can try before you buy and save your download ratio if you don't think it's worth it. I guarantee you though, it most certainly is.

And even though Canada has "remastered" it's Prime Minister, we'll still call it by the same name ;-) Track times and disc splits remain exactly as they were.

And as was the case in the original remaster...

Performance

A mostly solid performance, with everyone in fine form throughout, though while most of the show goes without fault, there are a couple of noticeable mistakes that range from minor to apparent that do drag the show down, in my opinion, which I will also list in order of them occurring: Bono flubbing a lyric on Beautiful Day, Edge hitting a clunker on the piano during New Year's Day, Zoo Station not having the best start and The Fly having a messy moment where the band skip the 2nd chorus entirely and go straight to the solo. However, to counteract this, the rest of the songs are done well while also including songs such as Bad, Gloria, The Ocean, and Original Of The Species, which are all excellent additions to the setlist, as is the Stories For Boys snippet on Vertigo.

Overall

Overall, a solid show for the 1st leg of the tour, with a mostly fine performance from the band while featuring some rarer songs for the tour, such as Gloria, The Ocean, Bad and Original Of The Species, which are all great to hear live. While there are a couple of noticeable mistakes in the performance, some of these could have been much worse, and certain aspects in other performances of songs do somewhat make up for these errors. Still, for what this show is, I enjoyed it even if it isn't the tidiest show on the leg.
