Performance

They sound really good! Bono's voice is a tad rough but it doesn't hurt the performance, and he really soars at some points (like Until the End of the World, Love and Peace, and One). It's a gig in a Spanish-speaking country, which of course means Bono is sprinkling Spanish gratuitously through his speech. As ever, Larry hammers the drums with such driving energy. Edge and Adam carry everything perfectly. There are no serious -- or really even minor -- flubs, lyrically or musically.

Show starts off strong with a high-energy version of City of Blinding Lights right into a killer Vertigo that has the crowd chanting away. It sounds like Bono might get Larry to sing a bit on Elevation, which is a strong version. The classic Until the End of the World -> New Year's Day combo early in the set is a good choice that carries on the energy, though Bono's brief pause to thank the crowd between them disrupts the flow just a bit. There's a little snippet of "40" in Still Haven't Found which is a nice touch, and Edge and Adam sound beautiful there. Bono makes Argentina-specific references in Beautiful Day, and Edge's fuzzy guitar is loud! A lovely rendition of The First Time gives a breather and lets Bono talk about his father before Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own where Edge sounds really clear -- I don't think I've ever appreciated the guitar work on this song as much as here -- and Adam's bass absolutely defines the ending. Love and Peace Or Else opens the "political" part of the show in suitably epic fashion; this song is definitely one of U2's most underappreciated rockers. Edge makes some great sounds on Sunday Bloody Sunday and Rock the Casbah is a great snippet for the song. Bono howls about going home during Bullet the Blue Sky and Edge plays both formidably and delicately. While it isn't perhaps the absolute most operatic Bono has been during Miss Sarajevo, he really carries it here, and Pride kicks the energy right back up again and the crowd goes wild from its outro and the segue to Where the Streets Have No Name. Say what you will about Bono's long-winded speeches on this tour, but the ethereal background intro to One is always so beautiful to me, and the song itself hits hard with Bono's voice soaring. Zoo Station is nice to hear and there's some fun "alrights" in there with Bono and Edge singing together, but The Fly really kicks the encore into gear, with some delightful, nearly-swing-like drumming from Larry and that crazy guitar -- I've never noticed it before, but on parts Edge sounds like he's playing Ultra Violet. Mysterious Ways is fun and has the slide solo just as it should, and segues right into With Or Without You, where the band and the crowd alike shine. The performance of Mothers of the Disappeared is a special one, with Edge on charango, and gives way to a delicate piano rendition of Original of the Species which really picks up as it goes -- Bono quips that they might need to rehearse it more, but it sounds great to me. All I Want Is You starts off with some beautiful, twinkling guitar and then grows into a rumbling great end to the show.

Sound

Outstanding sound. Easily listenable all the way through and well-balanced so you can easily hear each band member's contributions, which is certainly not the case on many bootlegs, even other good-sounding ones.

Audience

Nothing beats a Latin American U2 crowd. Listen to them go! Tracks like Vertigo, Elevation, Still Haven't Found, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride, One, Mothers of the Disappeared, and All I Want Is You make you really want to be a part of it.

Overall

Great, great show -- you can see why this is such a popular bootleg. The band sound really good and play with no errors, plus the setlist is really strong -- the only thing that feels a little bit of a shame is the lack of Boy songs like earlier on the tour and Miracle Drug's absence. Sometimes Vertigo Tour gigs feel a little flat or like the band (especially Bono) a little worn out, but nothing could be further from the truth here -- the energy is through the roof and even the slower songs hit with power. The encore slows down a bit but it makes up for the lower energy with a lot of heart.

It's hard to pick highlight list that doesn't end up being a huge swathe of the show because of the combination of powerful, high-energy performance and really great sound, but, well... here's a try...
