1980-11-28 - Birmingham, England - Aston University

setlist

Performance notes: Last known performance of "Father is an Elephant"; the song would eventually evolve into the track "Rejoice". The sound quality at the start of the set was bad, reportedly a result of Bono attempting to adjust the sound setup.

Performance

It's really tough to make any specific comments about each song as the volume balance of each part of the band varies a lot; Bono is basically absent from it for the entire show and thus it's almost impossible to give a definitive ranking / review of this show. From what I was able to gather, the band sounded mostly tight but a tad bit sloppy here and there and Bono is gutsy but unstable as per the norm for early shows.

Sound

Not a great recording at all - the sound is so muffled that you can basically only hear the drums at louder parts of the show - the vocals are buried completely in the mix and everything else is also hidden underneath tape hiss.
Recording: Audience microphone - 2.5 stars

Audience

Typical early U2 audience: Some mild cheering in between songs but otherwise inaudible.

Overall

Apart from the slightly interesting setlist (mainly just the final song though), this show is very unremarkable and forgettable both in quality and performances.

Highlights: Touch, Father Is an Elephant
Lowlights: None
