REMASTER notes:
There is one known recording of this Tokyo '89 date. At some point a transfer
of the master was done to DAT. The taper was identified as Yoshiaki Sumitomo,
who must have been the same guy as S.K., as mentioned in the original notes.
The source info was established from the DAT transfer.
A wonderful recording really, but to me this analogue transfer to 1GEN sounds
better than the master to DAT (no doubt the analogue copy was made on a top-
notch Japanese tape-deck!).
The remaster was pretty straight forward with a little pitch correction
(reference A=440) first, then most of the upfront hand claps were removed
by a "De-click" in the RX7. I also took out some of the more louder screams
and whistles. A tat of dynamic EQ in Ozone 7 merely to give the bass a bit
more prominence and bit more overall body to the sound. Fades were applied
to smoothen the tape-flips. There is a bit of introduction missing before
"Angel Of Harlem". This remaster was then used for the U2START mixlr listening
party of May 30, 2020.
ORIGINAL notes (by unknown):
As luck would have it, I managed to locate a great tape trading partner
in Japan (S.K. - through Goldmine), who taped shows as well. This guy was
a real find, his recordings were of the highest quality and he had a number
of other contacts in Japan who had some older shows. I traded with him for
close to 10 years until he told me he was getting out of the hobby all
together ... that was a sad day indeed.
The only drawback to trading with him is that it often took months from
when I sent him his tapes and my requests, to actually getting my tapes…
small price really for the rare and superior sounding shows I got from him.
Lots of top-notch video too, so if anyone could tell me how I go about moving
my VHS tapes to my pc, I could share some great 1st gen video from Japan as
well ...
This is one of the shows he taped himself ... a great sounding U2 from the
Love Town tour. Simply stated, it is fantastic quality, even more so when you
consider it's over 20 years old ...
Tape flips are noticeable but nothing is missing. Weird cut after Bono introduces
the BB King Orchestra before Angel Of Harlem though ... after he introduces Walter,
there was some silence on the tape (which I edited out) then Angel starts ...
not sure what happened there but nothing is missing really ...
