1. A topic to discuss U2's expected and still unnamed album in 2023 with new songs.

Some band quotes indicating this new album:

"We will have some songs released before the end of this year and then we will regroup to finish work on our new album." - Adam, 2022
"We are preparing new songs, for an album that should be released in 2023. And if the circumstances allow, we will do a world tour then." - Adam, 2021
"We have new songs and we're hoping to release an album in a couple of years, but we can't talk much about it yet. I will just say that some of the tracks fill us with pride." - Adam, 2021
"I'm working on a lot of new songs at the moment. We have a bunch that are.. we haven't figured out what to do with them yet. For me the lockdown has been quite a creative period for me." - The Edge, 2021
"I’m always working on new songs. I’ve not stopped since we came off the road, so yes. The question, I suppose, is whether we have a plan to finish or release it. Not so far. But there’s a lot of exciting music being created." - The Edge, 2020

What do you expect? If this is an Edge in lockdown album I'm quite excited..
  2. After the 'songs of' albums and knowing SOS will be a stripped down album, i really hope this new album will be a heavy guitar album
  3. SOS isn't a stripped down album. Yes some of the songs are being stripped down. But others won't be, and I expect from what has been shared with me, will be quite experimental for the band.
  4. U2Wanderer1, Are you able to share who is producing the new U2 album of new material? Thanks.

    Experimental sounds good 🥳
  6. I thought U2 were over the "Songs of" era after SOI and SOE (despite Songs of Surrender being announced). Do we know for sure that 2023 will be another "Songs of" album?
  7. “This album will also likely have a title which starts with “Songs Of…” but is unlikely to be Songs of Ascent – it appears U2 have been developing a second project instead.”

    From https://www.u2songs.com/news/upcoming/

(The band also still seems to be actively planning on releasing “Songs of Ascent” as a separate distinct album)
  8. its not clear to me which producers have been working with them on the new album vs Songs of Surrender. Or if it’s a mix of both for some of the people involved to date.
  9. So they could have released 5 "Songs of" albums in a row...

    Songs of Innocence
    Songs of Experience
    Songs of Surrender
    Songs of [2023]
    Songs of Ascent

I wish they would be over the "Songs" Era to move forward with a clean slate. I get "Songs of Surrender" with the connection to Bono's book; any new material after should have proper titles.

Ever thought about what Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience albums could have been named if they used song titles? Cedarwood Road and The Lights of Home or Love is All We Have Left come to mind for Songs of Experience.

Thank you for the update. It also appears The Edge has been working with Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin. I know they worked together on the guitar auction, not sure if music is involved as well.

Yeah it’s not clear to me. Ezrin worked with U2 on the BBC special where the band redid their songs with an orchestra. He produced the music for that. So if they are recreating songs, it could be that he has been involved in. (But Songs of Surrender will have multiple producers involved. They’ve worked with a number of people on those 40 songs, and I expect you’ll see The Edge taking a producer credit as well on the album.)
