You are right and that's exactly what made (and still makes) me angry about the Joshua Tree Tour(s): U2 had always been in the opposite field. Even having produced masterpieces with huge commercial success like Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, they always kept writing and promoting new albums, they never relied on past success to sell their tours out.

It's not their fault it's the audience age demographic all bands from the 1980s and beyond suffer the same fate ,In fairness U2 are still creating new music and touring it when they don't really need to they could just do greatest hits or classic album tours and most of the audience would be happy or wouldn't care as nostalgia is certified box office gold for established acts.

Does anyone remember the strange speculation about the album being recorded as mp3s and that was what the CD was made of?

I don't recall such a thing but dismantling that theory it would be as easy as going to the shelf, taking the NLOTH CD out of its case for the first time in a decade and performing a spectral analysis.
