1. they already have the 3rd masterpiece - POP

how any album containing crazy tonight and boots can be considered a great work is beyond me

lose those tracks and there - you have a 4th masterpiece

though i have to add, boots and crazy were always very good live - and some of the promo versions of boots with the varying intros were awesome!

but i think u2 fans and generic fans alike thought boots was too much like vertigo's weaker brother - and everyone had had enough of vertigo by then
  2. Achtung Baby is the third masterpiece, maybe even the fourth.
  3. Generous. But subjective. Boy and UF are fantastic but I don’t think they scaled the heights of JT and AB. JT I feel gets too much credit as a masterpiece due to its spectacular commercial success. Another album I don’t revisit much.
  4. NLOTH will never be a masterpiece with the title track on it!
  5. There are some good tracks on NLOTH (and the two shows I attended on the 360 Tour - in both 2009 and 2011 - were a blast) but this album isn’t close to being a masterpiece.
  6. NLOTH certainly not the 3rd masterpiece or close. Nevertheless I do like most of NLOTH.

The U2 album which comes close to the 3rd masterpiece is SOI.
  7. NLOTH had some very high highs imo (Fez, Breathe, MOS) but the lows were incredibly low...Unknown Caller is probably a top 3 terrible U2 song and the GOYB, Crazy tonight, and SUC middle section feels so out of place it’s jarring.

As others alluded to, some incredible ideas on this album that overall got derailed by commercial and touring considerations.

360 Tour was a blast though.
  8. Moment of Surrender and Breathe do indeed look like a step forward, as did Fez (although I don't go back to it very often...maybe since it did get any live renditions). I do like Magnificent and think the title track is ... okay as it reminds me of some of the songs on AB. It ends there for me.
  9. We need @drewhiggins to chime in and say their third masterpiece is actually Passengers

    Fully agree.
  11. When did anybody say it was the third masterpiece?
