1. One of those big bands that don't have a topic here.

I quite like them, specially their first two albums, Is This It (2001) and Room On Fire (2003 methinks). Their third work, Impressions On Earth (2006) was a bit more mediocre, and now they're just about to release another album: Angles. You can listen to it in full streaming here: http://www.elpais.com/especial/the-strokes/

So, any Strokes fans, this is your thread
  2. I honestly thought that First Impressions of Earth was their best one, "You Only Live Once" being their best song. Also really enjoy "Heart in a Cage".

Picked up Angles yesterday (was released officially here yesterday) and gave it two full listens- I enjoy it, but not as much initially as FIOE for sure. I've read a few reviews that say it really grows on you with each and every listen. The opener "Machu Piccu" makes me smile and bob my head, and the lead single "Under Cover of Darkness" is classic Strokes.

Thats many peoples' complaint with Angles, though, is that its the fourth Strokes release in a row that sounds exactly like the same old Strokes. They need to innovate. And I agree.

That all being said, I LOVE their look. Julian Casablancas is the ultimate badass- super sleek, SUPER cool look. His sunglasses make his image Wish I could have caught these guys at Lollapalooza last year.

About time they had a proper topic; Cheers Sergio
  3. You Only live Once is among their best songs for me too, I simply love it. The videoclip is great too. And there are other great songs like Juicebox or Razorblade... But I felt the album was so inconsistent and too quality-variable... and I hate that. That's what make me not to fully like albums as No Line On The Horizon, Black Holes and Revelations (Muse), Continuum (John Mayer)... that kind of albums which have 4 or 5 (even 7!) truly great songs and then 4 or 5 that sound like crap... I don't like that. I prefer more stable-in-quality albums like Room On Fire, there isn't a single song that I skip when listening to that record (like Achtung Baby, Absolution or Battle Studies to give the same examples as above).

    But opinions are opinions

Room on Fire is the only release I don't own completely- only Reptilia. So I suppose I should save my judgment for when I hear the whole album though.

Funny you mention Mayer though, I'm the complete opposite with Battle Studies/Continuum, but that's a whole new thread

Listening to You Only Live Once over and over, bobbing my head and daydreaming about Julian Casablancas singing it right in front of me on a stage someday. What a coooooooool guy, I can't get over it!!
  5. I thought you were straight?

    x100

PS. You can open a John Mayer thread if you wish

  6. Ehhh I'll keep it quiet til he starts stirring things up again. Not much to discuss currently.

And damnit, now I've learned You Only Live Once on guitar and will play it all day.
  7. One of those bands I didn't like when I gave my first listen to then, but now I use to listen to at least one song p day

Someday and Hard To Explain are my favorite songs, and I'm really into Machu Picchu right now...Amazing work in my opinion!

Yeah, Machu Picchu is definitely one of my favorites off Angles. That and "Call Me Back"
  9. Speaking of them... here are two awesomely sick performances from the 2010 Isle of Wight festival.

    Reptilia:

    Take It or Leave It:
  10. Damn, that Reptilia performance really kick assssss
  11. Giving Angles another spin. Enjoying "Under Cover of Darkness" more each time I hear it.
  12. It's great. It has become a classic already in the indie clubs here, I can swear that I was at an Arctic Monkeys&The Strokes party two fridays ago (Angles hadn't been released yet), and everyone in the venue were singing Under Cover at the top of their lungs. But nothing beats Reptilia, that's a real indie anthem.
