1. Bottom line for me is that I love u2 and their music. I don’t know ANY of them personally but can only see their actions as people in life (primarily Bono’s).

Bono has always wrestled with Christians and their ideas of culture and the church.

Edge or Bono even said it’s not Jesus they have a problem with but the people who call themselves followers of Christ.

Even though I don’t agree with how Bono and u2 are going about their style of attack, I will agree this is not outside of their normal behavior. I still listen to their newest album loud and proud in my car and in the house. My children even love the new material.

This is a music video and I see the people’s opinions on both sides. We are not in the band though. We can get over it or gripe and complain.

I’m over it and pray for Trump, America an people everywhere.
  2. People say never to sing about politics or God. We sing about both. -Bono

I guess this is where it gets you haha
  3. Bono has already described himself as a carney barker, a crowd stirrer, etc. You take a average-good U2 song and mix it with this video - > it gets more publicity and talk then otherwise deserved. I still view the song as a message to his daughter(s) - not sure why it has been morphed into something else. Enjoy the song and the album. Please remember diversity is strength. Not everyone has to think or act the same. We just need to respect and appreciate each other.

  5. A lot of effort went into the video. Pretty good stop motion.

Joyce, I understand why the mods don't want a political battle here on U2Start. I also respect you very much. I think you are awesome as you constantly bring us great bootlegs. I've always wished i knew as much as you do when it comes to re-mastering a bootleg. Unfortunately i don't know the first thing about it.

But I am surprised you edited my post. I didn't write anything shocking or untrue. I was responding to the video of GOOYOW. Which basically shows Trump as the KKK leader. He's opening the curtains of the White House to see them marching outside. I explained that the KKK haven't been relevant here in the US for decades. Sure there are wannabe skinheads. They are amateurs. They aren't out there lynching people. Yet the Black Lives Matters protests who chant for cops to be killed, "What do we want? Dead Cops. Pigs in a blanket. Fry them like bacon." About 100 cops have been ambushed and killed over the last few years because of this movement. They have wives and children. Totally innocent.

Joyce, Why didn't you edit RattleandHum1988? He replied, "Seriously, if you (generally speaking) support this prick at this point.....I can't even put it into words." He's a 26 yr old Canadian who knows jack shit about the US. Yet I am edited for, unnecessarily provocative." Not him? Come on Joyce. I've been a U2 fan for 35 yrs. Longer than his butt has been alive.

My point is that U2 released a political video. I disagree with them big time. I should be able to respond to the video and others on this forum without being edited. I didn't start this conversation. And the mods have yet to "edit" other viewpoints on the left for being "unnecessarily provocative". Those comments seem to be ok.

And for that reason I'll be voting for my President again in 2020. Unless maybe the left can respond intellectually. Instead of editing my post to the points they disagree with.

And that's not counting Steve King a.k.a "diversity is not a strength" and a long list. This was obvious before the whole "shithole countries" fiasco. The video shows that, and I get the point. But now in 2018 we are beyond any parody. The reality is way more terrible than any parody or satire. Just putting these guys in a KKK hood is not going to break any ground. I wanted to see a more clever and poignant critique in the video, if they decided to go that way.
For me, the video and the song are not good enough because they only offer platitudes against a bleak reality.

So this statement by Cesar is not ""unnecessarily provocative"???? Saying there are white supremacists in the White House? That's not provocative Joyce? That's one of the most irresponsible things I have ever heard. You didn't edit his post. It's totally ridiculous. Yet Cesar's post wasn't edited?

If I said that Obama and his administration were racist i bet my post would be deleted. Don't you understand that is how Trump was elected? You only wanna hear your own viewpoints and feel good about yourself. And the left gets rid of anyone who disagrees with them
  8. Hey Raynman,
Thank you for your kind words - I'll do my best!

I respect your opinions, that's not the point. What I have edited out was only the part with what "left has left." I thought that was unnecessarily provocative, and not contributing to the discussion about the video. I mean, that was opening the door to a broad discussion of American politics in general. We've been there once and it caused a lot of anger and we decided that those discussions should be held elsewhere.

Of course, the GOOYOW video is a political video, and as such we (u2start) should allow for discussion about it. But, learning from previous discussions about American politics, it is a challenge to keep those discussions within boudaries. Boundaries necessary to keep u2start a place where all feel comfortable and safe.

Why I haven't edited other posts (e.g. the RattleandHum1988 post you mentioned) is because I had the feeling that things were said back-and-forth and that was just that.

I merely wanted to draw the line at some point and say: c'mon people, be civil now.

    Editing your post wasn't personal.

Right. I agree and I talked with César about this internally. But as he his my fellow mod and colleague, it's not up to me to edit his post.

And basically as what I said in the above, I also don't feel it is my task to edit every single post when something nasty has been said. Sometimes things go rough, and especially with these American politics. That is just how it is and it should be no surprise to each and everyone that things are heated with this subject.

What I do feel as my task as moderator is, at some point, to say: OK guys, to here and no further. And that's what I did.

And if someone is repeatedly provoking other u2start members, (serious) measures will be taken.

Look, these are exactly the kind of statements that get things overheated. To be clear: these are personal attacks and provoke a reaction from the other side. Don't do it.

Now I don't know if this comment was directed at me, or at César, but I think you may see that I'm fairly impartial about this and let everybody have their say, as long as people don't get personally attacked.

Yes, some people say nasty things about Trump, and then others say nasty things about Hillary. Please forgive me that I don't keep score.
  10. U2 are really eroding my love for them with this kind of stuff.
  11. Thanks for responding Joyce. I really respect you and thank you for bringing us so many great U2 bootlegs. I've been on other U2 fan forums where politics were welcomed. And it didn't go well. So I understand where politics should not become a big issue here on U2Start. I love this forum for this reason. And I understand that as you are a Mod you need to keep control. It must be hard at times.

I guess my only point is that we are all crazy die-hard U2 fans. We all have different political viewpoints. I totally understand why people are anti-trump. Yet I support him for various reasons. Don't put me down because you don't like him. I don't post much but I love César. We listened to SOE with Rob before the album was released. César is such a funny guy. I totally get his sense of humor.

Joyce, it shouldn't be your job to keep score. I get that. U2Start isn't about this. And i like U2Start for this reason. But please don't edit my posts when I'm mostly responding to posts who are left in nature. Especially when these posts go unedited.
  12. The whole mantra of SOE is joy as an act of defiance, and love is bigger than anything in its way. Well that’s what Bono tells anyways!

This video is the total opposite of that message. It’s obviously meant to be divisive, but possibly goes too far, too close to the bone, trying to be too divisive, and possibly for the sake of it. The hatters will have a field day.

Better to fight back with joy, rather than using images of a dead boy washed up on a beach.

I actually watched the video for Please yesterday, it’s in essence the same subject matter but gets the message across in a very different way.

This band has had more shit thrown at it down through the years, and a lot of it unfair, but two wrongs don’t make a right.
