Okay, so ... (deep inhaling breath) I know what I am about to post totally deviates from the "only 13 songs" rule, but ... gotta be honest: I remember doing this with THE JOSHUA TREE back in the day when fans grappled to come up with a perfect double LP that combined the original album lineup with its singles/B-sides. The end result was majestic, as it filled an entire 80 minute CD, which (to me) is kinda the point. I mean, why not get ALL the most desirable/relevant songs one would want from both SONGS OF INNOCENCE and EXPERIENCE onto one disc?
That in mind, that's what I did in correlation to how THE JOSHUA TREE was laid out back in the day. So, basically, the lineup I picked for SOI&E fits onto one CD with a minute to spare. I know, I KNOW ... it's not what was asked, but ... consider it, if you will, those of you keen on burning something to play in the car, because when laid out as follows, the thematic and sonic flow of tracks is ... quite nice, IMHO:
SONGS OF INNOCENCE & EXPERIENCE
1. Song for Someone
2. Iris (Hold Me Close)
3. Cedarwood Road
4. The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)
5. Lucifer's Hands
6. Raised By Wolves
7. This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
8. Invisible (Full Length Version)
9. Get Out of Your Own Way
10. American Soul
11. Ordinary Love (Paul Epworth Mix)
12. The Little Things That Give You Away
13. Every Breaking Wave (New Radio Mix)
14. Love Is All We Have Left
15. The Blackout
16. Lights of Home (Free Yourself/Beck Remix)
17. 13 (There Is A Light)

Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
1. All of Innocence
2. Experience with the following three tweaks: (a) Lights of Home St Peter version; (b) Best thing acoustic version; (c) Invisible instead of AS.
3. B+sides: OL new version; Lucifer; Ballroom; Book.
I find the above Innocence + Experience package impressively varied, inspired, singable, and diverse. On the whole, definitely more upbeat and rockier than No Line. Artistically, probably better than Leave Behind + Bomb combined. Commercially, Leave Behind + Bomb of course kick ass: unlike Innocence + Experience, they have the singles - and some really nice ones, too.
Overall, I am massively impressed by what the band has achieved at this stage of their carrier.
I wonder what the songs sounded like that were from the Innocence sessions, which were kept back for Experience, but that never made the final cut. There's an interview somewhere where I think The Edge says most of that stuff wasn't kept (with the exception of Little Things which was referenced a long time ago). As much as I do like Experience, I can't help but wonder what those songs were like...same goes for the album that existed before Trump was elected. Was it better? Was it the same minus a few lyrical tweaks?
