Performance

Your typical ZOO TV start to the show, not a strong as previous shows but solid overall. Bono gets a bit lost in Zoo Station going into the final chorus too early during the bridge. The tambourine rattle is quite prominent during the first few seconds of The Fly, There's a longer pause than usual before Mr Fly zaps through the TV channels. EBTTRT follows of course in reaction to what he decides to watch and Mysterious Ways continues the party vibe.

There's no introduction before One, and it's a fantastic performance vocally too. UTEOTW rocks things up again after a tender snippet of Unchained Melody, and it's Bono's moment to play with the crowd and the Edge as he calls out "home boy!" before the solo in reference to Edge's Welsh heritage. New Years Day keeps the energy level up in the stadium, the crowd and band as one.

New material in the set begins with Numb, a stark contrast to other songs that encourage audience participation. Babyface is a peak performance now having been rehearsed more, and probably my favourite of the live versions. "You think I gotta baby face?" asks Bono as the band launch into the acoustic set with Angel Of Harlem that merges into a fun rendition of Dancing Queen. "I don't think it's his birthday but it might as well be" says Bono in reference to Edge again being in his home town. Stay follows next instead of being lumped with the other Zooropa songs, which shows it can stand up with their older material just as well. Satellite Of Love is dedicated to flying saucers... and "not the ones in the sky but the ones that feed us", probably in reference to the crisps? I'm not sure.

Bad is a rousing performance, with snippets of Irish Heartbeat and The First Time. BTBS kills all sentiment however crashing in like a bull and is Edge's moment to shine again with a lengthy solo. Larry comes in a little too early for the 'hallelujah' section during Running To Stand Still and quickly corrects himself, the song ends with some nice improv singing from Bono. Where The Streets Have No Name is a strong performance in it's ZOO TV form. Pride follows bringing the main set to it's uplifting close. Audience confessions are played on the screens before the encore, including messages from the band's crew.

Desire starts of the encore with Macphisto's snippets of 'You Make Me Feel So Young' and of course 'Green Green Grass Of Home'. Edge gets another mention for this being a home away from home, before Macphisto's speech turns to Margaret Thatcher and how she sold off the UK. He then attempts to call her and is told he needs to write to her instead. He ends sarcastically with 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'. Ultra Violet comes next, being the pinnacle moment of the encore and where Macphisto starts turning back into Bono. With Or Without You makes a return to the set having been absent for a while and has a lovely cabaret vibe as well as a great solo from Edge leading into the 'shine like stars' segment.

Love Is Blindness again has some beautiful guitar touches from Edge close to the album version as he did previously in Leeds His solo here is also one of his best. Can't Help Falling In Love closes ZOO TV in Cardiff with the crowd carrying the song with Bono before he assures them Elvis is still in the building and bids them goodnight.

Sound

Sound is muddy in parts, overall it's okay but the quality differs throughout.
Recording: CD Silver - 3.5 stars

Audience

A great, rowdy Cardiff crowd. You can hear the odd conversation and people singing along.

Overall

A fun and loose show with very few mistakes and a nice flow, yet not as strong as other ZOO TV shows. This is Edge's show of the tour, being in a home way from home. A shame about the audio quality, because that aside, this is a good bootleg to keep.
