Performance

A pivotal show that shows the Pop songs growing better in performance. The band start with the most unique version of Mofo of the tour, a hybrid of the early live version but with the more upbeat, swinging groove of what it was to become. I Will Follow is also played energetically as is EBTTRT which gets the crowd going.

Gone has really taken shape, this performance gets a great reaction from the crowd who sound happily surprised when Pride is played after, which follows into a big singalong with ISHFWILF. Bono mentions how a monsoon almost took out the stage screen and thanks the crew for their efforts to repair it. Last Night On Earth rocks, but finishes a bit too early before the band rip into UTEOTW. A lovely rendition of IGWSHA is sung well, it's almost a full performance of the song.

A full band version of Staring At The Sun is great, if they stuck with the arrangement for the rest of the tour it could have also worked as a closer for the show. Edge takes his karaoke spot to sing Sweet Caroline, the crowd join with the singalong. Miami, another great live Popmart moment builds a hypnotic mood before it morphs into Bullet The Blue Sky. Please is performed with passion and captivates the crowd. The SBS drum riff fades as the synth swell of WTSHNN starts, needless to say the song goes down more than well and closes the main set on a high.

Discotheque is energetic, but skips a verse. Pyrotechnic explosions accompany the "boom-chas" before the song resolves on the Howie B mix. IYWTVD is brief yet wonderful and a nice coda to the previous song. With Or Without You ends the first encore with a mass singalong. HTTMKMKM opens the final part of the show with some nice extended guitar work from Edge at the start, but a slight timing issue when the band come in. Mysterious Ways also suffers timing issues at the start but quickly finds the groove and is a good performance. Bono slightly fluffs the lyrics at the start of One, yet overall it's a solid rendition. A nice snippet of Unchained Melody ends the show.

Sound

A good sounding bootleg.
Recording: "Original recording - J. B.-Sony Tcd D8 + Core Sound Cardioids " - 4 stars

Audience

Great audience, one of the most enthusiastic on this first leg of the tour.

Overall

An energetic show and probably most unique performance-wise for the first leg of Popmart. The band up to now had been working out new material in front of audiences, that's what makes the early part of this tour interesting. A show worth revisiting.
