Performance

Band plays great, sound energised but the setlist is yet to flow better as is clunky in parts. Regurgitating carbon copy parts from the I&E tour instead of moving these songs about feels a bit stale here. The 2018 rendition of 'Iris' isn't as good as played in 2015. Those issues aside, the show is strong for the start of a tour and the new songs come across well.

Audience

Not very alive and passive.

Overall

'This Is Not A Rehearsal' claimed the screens on ZOO TV. For an opening night this show sounds more of a rehearsal than a concert. Maybe it's the vibe from the crowd, the band certainly are playing well enough but something is off.

I can imagine this show being a treat for the nerds and a let down for the casual fan. Having no Joshua Tree songs must have confused some and explained the mute reception, this tour was more of a theatre production that told a story and not an average rock gig. We, the fans however do get a generous set with some gems such as the live debut of 'Acrobat' as well as 'Staring At The Sun', 'The Ocean' and 'Wild Horses' which came back later during the European leg yet could of stayed as encore opener. And of course, MacPhisto is back after a 25 year break.

The setlist still needs work, 'Beautiful Day' comes in too early (it gets the biggest crowd reaction after the opening songs which is telling of what sort of audience they are playing to) I Will Follow would eventually be better placed here. The SOI songs bunched together comes across as unimaginative. Above all this however there's no negative on the band's playing who put energy into the songs, even the 'happy meal' section on the e-stage is played with hype.

One of U2's strangest yet compelling tours. By the time I saw it a lot had changed and the show found it's identity.
