1987-04-29 - Rosemont, Illinois - Rosemont Horizon

setlist

Performance notes: This show has been immortalised in the famous bootleg Rock's Hottest Ticket, titled after a Time magazine headline about U2 from earlier in 1987. This is one of the most popular unofficial U2 releases.

Performance

While U2 still seem to be in an overall good mood at their only Chicago-area show on the first leg of the "Joshua Tree" Tour, the highlights are more scarce compared to the Californian nights. Bono's voice is in good shape but he doesn't use it to its full extent in many of the earlier numbers with highlights including a really strong "Where the Streets Have No Name", "I Will Follow", which features a much extended bridge section, both led by Bono and the audience at times and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", which once again includes a great "Exodus" snippet with many great belts.

The following numbers are all solid but were performed more extraordinarily at previous shows with the only exception being a truly magnificent "Running to Stand Still". Luckily, the big show-stopper "Bad" is performed excellently tonight, including some great "WIDE awake" nailings by Bono. During "Springhill Mining Disaster", Edge plays a few bum notes early on and Bono later angrily tells the audience to shut up and stop whistling, noting that "this is not The Beatles, this is U2!" Right afterwards, he properly thanks the crowd for their patience and introduces "New Year's Day" as a song about the Polish Solidarity movement. The encores are truly fantastic and probably the highlight of the show as a whole.

Sound

By far the best recording of the tour yet!
Recording: "transfer from master tapes" - 5 stars

Audience

It's a late 80s U2 show in the Chicago area so you're bound to get a great audience!

Overall

Adding back half a star because this show includes some great and rare songs like "Trip Through Your Wires", "Springhill Mining Disaster" and "Mothers of the Disappeared", which is always a bonus in my opinion.

Highlights:
• Where the Streets Have No Name
• I Will Follow
• I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For / Exodus
• Running to Stand Still
• Exit / Gloria
• Bad / Ruby Tuesday / Sympathy for the Day
• Mothers of the Disappeared
• With or Without You / Shine Like Stars / Love Will Tear Us Apart
• Gloria
• "40"
