U2 - Mofo
Album:
Pop (1997)
  1. A generally highly rated track amongst fans (in the 'design your own album' it was more popular than 'one') but do people love it because it sounds so dirty? I realise that the song is another dedicated to his mother, but Bono must have realsied what a song entitled 'Mofo' and with outrageous lyrics such as

' lookin' in the places where no flowers grow
lookin' for to fill that GOD shaped hole' (for those of you with almost religious beliefs of a woman's ******)

    'mother suckin' rock and roll'

'Been around the back...been around the front'

'Mother...mother suck, yeah, fuck yeah, rock and roll'

    ...well, you get the picture.

I also fear that it may be only a matter of time before that gorgeous backbeat is stolen and used for some rap song, in a similar fashion to the way that 'Blue Monday' or 'Tainted Love' has been used over and over, or more recently David Bowie's 'Let's Dance'

Shall we start a petition to stop this or do you think U2 will refuse any such approach?

Actually I never saw anything sexual in that line...just a great description of a feeling in his life, he feels that God is missing in his life, that he's lost his connection with God...this has made a hole in his life, an emptiness...what's missing that's caused this "hole", is God...hence, "God-shaped hole".

yeh thats what I saw in that line too. i never really saw it as a sexy song. more of a techno-carnival to hide the real emotion behind. and then in the middle 8....'mother.. am i still your son?' all that emotion is released.

never thought of it like that haha, but B himself has stated over and over that the God shaped hole is definitely the feeling of emptiness in the world within himself, or all of us. but I love what you saw in that, i'm a big fan of religiously sexual imagery!
  6. I always looked at "Looking for to fill that God shaped hole" as something similar to "I still haven't found what I'm looking for".

Like, when you're born, you're like an empty hole, something with potential. And as you're growing people (but not all of them) are trying to make something out of their potential, they're trying to fill that hole.

And about all that nasty lyrics...that's Bono. : )) And that's what genius artist do...they try to confuse and shock people.
  7. My favourite U2 song, I would be very pissed if some rapper would sample it or something like that... But I don't know if they could do anything about it. Once it's released there's nothing that can be done, especially nowadays with the Internet. They might only get some money and writer's credit. Look at Ice Ice Baby, that's also still played sometimes.

Have to join the rest of the gang, never saw any sexual innuendo in that lol - I always considered it to be the thing that Bono talked about, having that emptiness inside one's soul that he's had trouble filling. Check U2 by U2, he mentioned something about it there...

Me too. Dirty-minded so and so
  12. hope they dont copy the beat for an popy and cheapy song...
just leave every u2 track alone !

Mofo is a special one for Bono, so hope they reinvent it again live
and its one of the darkest songs of them, thats maybe why its so beloved by fans
