A 14inch screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio is closer in size to a 15 inch screen with 16. I love the extra vertical space as I mainly write and don’t do much video.

    So far so good.

Exactly the opposite for me - I edit lots of video for work so having a proper 16 : 9 is actually a deal breaker. I fear these Matebooks would fall short GPU-wise for me though. The only alternative to what I currently have (an i7-7700 ASUS Republic Of Gamers) are the super expensive Elitebooks. Can't afford them! So for now I'm stuck with this

Yes on laptops once you have the extra vertical space, a 16: 9 laptop is really weird.
  4. I could do with a new laptop.
  5. I had to spend £500 to fix my Mac screen back in August having only bought it for 1k+ back in 2017. That felt like a kick in the teeth.

    RIP

I did the Mac thing for nearly 3 years. I decided to go back to Windows though. It was frustrating that I basically couldn't do anything to it myself. And play no games right

I've always been on Mac. I work in IT and some of the things on Windows just infuriate me. I can see why Windows is attractive though, but seeing how I'm IT Support for my family too it was easier putting them all on Macs rather than having to deal with all the 100 of daily issues and viruses that Windows have.

I get your point about upgrading Macs though. Mine is a 2017 model and I was looking at upgrading the RAM earlier this year but Apple have now soldered everything on so you're screwed. Back in 2015 I tried to game on a mid 2010 Mac and that was torture haha. Luckily Steam have a really good return policy.

Yep folk are in one camp or another when it comes to screen aspect ratios. I could never go back to 16 now. GPU's similar. The built in AMD graphics do the job but again my requirements are fairly minimal (hence using Chromebooks for seven years!).
  9. Correct. Fired my old laptop up to reset it so that my younger brother could use it. It was like looking through a letterbox.

My problem now is that I bought a 1080p 16x9 monitor two months ago before even considering a new laptop. The laptop screen is so much nicer that I now don't like docking it to the monitor! The monitor is 34 inches at least so I can comfortably snap 2 windows side by side but the resolution! The visible pixels!
  10. Has anyone used a Phillips TV before? Can't decide what TV to get for the PS5.

Samsung - 4K UHD and HDR10+. 2020 Model. Apple TV built in.
    https://www.richersounds.com/samsung-ue43tu7100.html?nosto=frontpage-nosto-4

    or

Phillips - 4K UHD, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos/Vision. Alexa built in.
    https://www.richersounds.com/philips-43pus7805.html?refSrc=68802&nosto=nosto-page-product3-copy

Now normally you would go for the the Phillips one. However PS5 doesn't support Dolby Atmos/Vision for games whereas the Xbox does. At this point it is unclear whether the PS5 will support media playback in Dolby Vision with Netflix etc. I know that Samsung are a reputable company when it comes to TVs but what about Phillips?

I ordered the Samsung last night and hope to have it on Thursday. Seems to be great for the money. The main draw for me was the built in support for almost everything including Apple air play. It will be replacing an almost 10 year old plasma so it should be an upgrade either way.

Both sets are only 50Hz though which is low for gaming. 120Hz seems to be ideal if gaming is a concern. It isn't for me but worth considering.
  12. Yeah the Samsung one does seem like a more complete package compared to the Phillips one.

I was 99% certain that it was the one I was going to buy, and my mate even bought one off my recommendation but now I'm having second thoughts. I did notice that both sets are at 50Hz but when I watched the YouTube reviews on the Samsung model they said you would still get 4K @ 60fps because that's what the input signal is. I'm doing some more research though to see if that's true.

I'm not fussed about 4K @ 120fps. You need HDMI 2.1 for that and it isn't widely available on TVs yet. Only on the top end models that are £1000+. Plus the vast majority of games won't reach 120fps, especially this early into the new generation.
