I did that for Last Night On Earth when we had a listening party here for its 30th anniversary and this was Sergio’s reaction:

  2. Ahahahahaha. I love Last Night On Earth. It’s so good. Criminally underrated track. That thing fucking rocked live, too.
  3. LNOE is one I definitely prefer live- Edge's power chords are 🔥🔥 and I still love Bono and Edge singing off each other
  4. After more recent listening, I think I’m…more or less sticking with my thoughts on how I’d reorganize the album.

    - 50/50 on which version of Staring at the Sun you pick. Both have their nice moments.

    - I’d take the front 2/3 of the Best of… mix of Discotheque and pair it with the back 1/3 of the album version. I cannot get over how much I crave that bright crisp dramatic Edge riff into the bridge section where Bono sings “Looking for the one…”. It’s just better on Best of…it’s got more power to it. Might be my favorite moment of the whole song. But I do like the BOOM-cha at the end from the album version, so I’d take that part.

    - I still can’t do the album mix of Gone because of the rhythmic phrasing of the lyrics…but I do like that bass riff at the very beginning right before Edge drops into the main guitar riff of the song better on the album than Best of…

    - Get Miami the f**k off of this album. Lmao. What a disaster. Replace it with HTMKMKM. Maybe stick Hold Me in between Playboy Mansion and If You Wear That Velvet Dress.

Anyway. I think they more or less eventually got it right. I still wish we’d hear more of pretty much all of this album. Do You Feel Loved, Last Night on Earth, and Please are all still criminally underrated. Probably my 4th favorite album of theirs if configured this way (behind JT, AB, and HTDAAB).

Just my random thoughts for the day, not that they’re worth much. But I’m bored, so here we are. LOL.

This brings another dimension to the conversation at least for some tracks
Live vs studio vs different mixes.
  6. The band has had PTSD (Pop Traumatic Stress Disorder) since this album was released. They’ve second guessed themselves ever since.

The album is 99% perfect as is!!!!!
  8. I loved the whole 95-98 era… POP is ace. I didn’t like the 2002 recordings but single versions of Please, Last Night and God Will Send are better than the album versions. Although I listened to the whole album last night and could change my mind now on Please.
  9. The only thing that annoys me is the bass in the wrong key at the start of Please.
Otherwise, Pop is perfect as it is, imho.

Yes.... I agree with you almost completely. If only Please ( live version) and Last Night on Earth ( live version) were the versions used in the album, then it would be perfect, imho.
  11. I do love the Best of Hone version because of the vocals and how Bono kind of just goes crazy at the end.

I need to listen to those mixes more!
